Sometimes new computers come with free copies of personal finance software -- usually simplified versions of Quicken or Money. Be sure to give these programs a trial run if you receive them, as they may offer you the tools you need at no extra cost.
Because you can find just about whatever you want on the Internet, there are of course many websites out there that offer specific finance tools (budgeting, lease vs. buy, mortgage/loan calculators, etc.). These sites usually don't require that you enter any personal information. Try MotleyFool.com, Bankrate.com or Money.com. If you choose to go with an unknown entity, make sure you triple-check the website for security before you enter any personal financial information or provide credit card numbers. Look for the little lock icon in the browser bar. The website should also have a page dedicated to its security protocols.
In addition, there are now websites dedicated to personal financial account management -- no software download required. Some, like Mint.com and Quicken Online, are free; these web-based personal accounting systems offer the same basic features as desktop software, including the ability to download and categorize transactions from your financial institution and create customized reports. Some, like Mvelopes.com, offer a more robust range of services and charge a monthly fee.
If you want to learn more about how to use your software or simply prefer printed manuals to online knowledge databases and electronic manuals, you can purchase "Quicken 2009 (or 2008) for Dummies." There isn't a Microsoft Money Plus version, however; the latest edition is "Microsoft Money 2006 for Dummies."
Keep in mind that each software title comes with a downloadable user guide and technical support, so it's not necessary to purchase the "Dummies" guides. Real-time support is also available, though it can be expensive. In Quicken's case, it's a steep $4.90 per minute for the more technical questions, although free online chat assistance is also available.
Aside from the sources cited on the Our Sources page, manufacturers' websites are helpful for reviewing product features and specifications. You will also find information on free trials.
