Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment is a salicylic acid formula that is designed to dry out existing pimples; however, it can dry out your skin due to its high alcohol content. It's not recommended for sensitive skin. Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10 (*Est. $6 for 1 oz.) gets better overall reviews and is our Best Reviewed choice.
Dries out pimples -- and surrounding skin. Reviewers at MakeupAlley.com and About.com say Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment effectively dries out pimples but it also affects surrounding skin. Paula Begoun, skin-care expert and author of "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me," says it's because the formula contains a lot of alcohol and other irritating ingredients. The formula dries clear but doesn't work well under makeup, according to Angela Palmer, acne guide at About.com. Users suggest applying it at night.
Alcohol adds some sting. Palmer says that Advantage Acne Spot Treatment stings on contact -- likely due to the high alcohol content -- but she points out that most put up with the discomfort because of the rapid results. Several users say the formula has a strong, overpowering scent.
