The Frigidaire FRA054XT7 is an inexpensive 5,000-Btu air conditioner that many reviewers find effective for cooling a small space. It's efficient, easy to install and reasonably quiet for most users. However, some owners complain that its construction is flimsy, breakdowns are common and repair service is a hassle. Noisy vibration can also be a problem, and airflow to the right side is limited.
Cools well for most users. The Frigidaire earns good scores for its cooling performance in professional tests (although it's not good at directing air to the right). Most owners also say it's effective for cooling a small room, although there are a few who find the unit almost totally ineffective. With an energy efficiency ratio (EER) of 10.7, the Frigidaire is less efficient than the top-rated Kenmore 70051 (*Est. $160) but still qualifies for an Energy Star rating. Professional testers say its noise level is moderate; most users find it acceptable, but a few complain of noise linked to vibration, as discussed below.
Feature-packed. Users love this Frigidaire's convenience features, which include a remote control, timer, auto-cool cycle and energy-saver mode. Most owners also say that the filter is easy to remove and clean, although they note that it's a slide-out type that requires adequate room on the right. Users generally say the unit is relatively easy to install, but we saw some complaints that it vibrates excessively, causing a loud and disruptive rattling noise. One owner reports "stuffing folded paper, foam, even expanding glue" only worked temporarily.
Flimsy construction. Although many users say this low-priced, feature-packed unit is a great value, others complain that it's flimsy, with interior parts made of polystyrene foam and a cheap plastic fan. Several owners say that their units were dented or otherwise damaged right out of the box, and others report that the air conditioner developed mechanical problems after less than one summer of use.
Although the unit is backed by a basic one-year/five-year warranty (which includes repair costs), reviews say getting service from Frigidaire is a real pain. Customer service is hard to reach, and several users complain about the hassle of hauling the unit to a repair shop.
