Experts and owners say the Frigidaire FRA126CT1 cools a large room well, but isn't as good a choice overall as the well-rated LG LW1212ER (*Est. $320). Both window air conditioners pack 12,000 BTUs of cooling power, enough for a 550-square-foot space. They also offer similar features, including a remote control, 24-hour timer and the ability to restart automatically after a power outage. Based on reviews of its nearly identical predecessor, however, the LG delivers better airflow to the right and left of the unit. In addition, the LG's slide-in chassis makes it easier to install -- you install a lightweight frame first, then slide the heavy air conditioner in.
The FRA126CT1 is similar to the FRA125CT1 (*Est. $330) sold at Best Buy and the LRA127CT1 (*Est. $330) sold at Lowe's. Most owners are completely satisfied with the Frigidaire regardless of version, but we did find recurring complaints that it's loud -- both continuous motor/fan noise and loud beeping when users change the controls. Some owners say the unit emits a musty smell from water that has collected inside, and others report that their ACs suffered damage during shipping because the box is flimsy.
ConsumerReports.org includes all three members of this family of Frigidare air conditioners in its ratings based on its testing of the Lowe's-exclusive LRA127CT1. User reviews can be found at Lowes.com, Walmart.com and BestBuy.com.
