To receive an Energy Star rating, a window air conditioner must reach a minimum EER (energy efficiency ratio) of 10.7. You can compare energy savings between models by calculating a 10 percent savings for each point difference of EER. An air conditioner rated at 10.7 EER will save 10 percent in energy costs over a 9.7 EER model. Since air conditioners with an Energy Star rating don't cost much more than non-rated models, experts say this one is a no-brainer.
