So far, A++, November 12, 2009

I've only had this air purifier a couple of days, and I'll definitely come back and edit this review if anything changes, but so far this is BY FAR the best air purifier I've ever had. I have allergy problems, and have used air cleaners in my bedroom for years. They've really helped. I've owned those made by Honeywell, and a top-of-the-line by Friedrich. This one is so much better. Pros: 1) SO EASY. Nothing to install or put together. No long instruction manual for use. You take it out of the box, plug it in, and turn it on. That's it. 2) The button controls are very intuitive and easy. You press "on", adjust it to the speed you want, and push the iodizer button. 3) This unit is very slender and takes up a fraction of the room of my other purifiers. Plus, it's aesthetically really nice, which is great. 4) It does make a white noise sound, but I love this. I have gotten used to the sounds of air purifiers at night, and am at the point now that I sleep better with it. The great thing about this purifier is that the white noise is so consistent with no cracking or snapping sounds. (The problem with the Friedrich I owned just before this.) 5) Within a few minutes you could already smell and feel the difference in the air - it's that good. 6) There is an light indicator that tells you when to replace the hepa filter. It's supposed to last round 6 months, and although I haven't had to yet, it looks like it's easy to replace. Nothing else to clean or maintain. Cons: For me, nothing so far. But if you are looking for an air purifier that is silent, this isn't it. As I said, it does make a white noise sound, and the higher the power the louder the noise. But for me this was a plus since I like that sound and with this unit it's particularly soothing and consistent. Highly, highly recommended.

DO NOT BUY, DEFECTIVE!!, September 28, 2009

I bought my pair of Alen 350 airpurifiers from Air Purifiers of America. The first unit was defective and was very load and screeching. They sent me a replacement and the replacement did the same. The third unit seemed ok. Within a month the other unit did the same thing so I got another replacement. Now it is about 9 months later and what do you know the last one to be replaced is now making a load noise as well. What do you expect, it was made in China! Although for the price I would expect a much better quality. I would not recommend this unit to anyone.

Fantastic!, June 1, 2009

I received this unit as a Christmas gift (I've been suffering from some pretty nasty allergies), and I love it! It's fairly loud and high-throughput at the two higher speed settings, but it's whisper-quiet at the lowest setting and creates a pleasant gentle breeze. I've got it positioned under my (quite large) desk, so I usually run it at the lowest speed when I'm working at my desk and at the second-highest speed the rest of the time. It's a great white noise machine at the higher setting (we've got several neighbors with dogs), and it really has improved my allergies. If I leave it off for a day or two, I start to feel the difference in the morning with stuffy nose and scratchy throat. It's been incredibly helpful. Also, the fact that it has a little series of lights to remind you when to change the filters is great. I haven't had to replace them yet (yay!), though it looks like I'll have to put in a new filter in 2-3 months. This is probably one of the best gifts I've received.

An Air Purifier to Avoid!!, May 25, 2009

My first Alen A350 failed within 30 days -- apparent blower wheel to blower motor mount failure. After 1-1/2 weeks of emails, Alen did replace the defective unit. Within the next 30 days, the replacement Alen A350 failed -- definite blower wheel to blower motor mount failure. I'm currently writing emails again to get a third A350. It is my opinion that either: 1.) the Alen A350 has a deficient blower mounting design; or 2.) the workmanship of this "Made-in-China" air purifier is poor.

1. Air-Purifiers-America.com

Air-Purifiers-America.com tests air purifier models with a high-performance laser particle counter, which measures the air purifier's ability to remove pollen, mold, dander, and dust particles from the air. In testing, the Alen A350 finishes second only to the top-ranked IQAir HealthPro in its efficiency at removing allergens. Editors note that the A350 air purifier is half the price of the HealthPro, and its filters are less expensive as well.

2. Air-Purifier-Power.com

Air-purifier expert Ed Sherbenou calls the Alen A350 "a good product struggling to get established in an overbuilt industry." He says it's especially good at dust and pollen removal, particularly for rooms of about 250 square feet.

3. Reviewboard.com

It's not clear if Reviewboard.com produced this review based on its own testing, although comments from Rory Ferreira do imply that he uses the Alen A350 himself. He praises the Alen A350 for of its compactness and wall-mounting capabilities, a plus for people in small living spaces, as well as its built-in ionizer that produces no ozone. He also questions the Alen A350's three-in-one filters (*est. $40), stating that rarely does "three of anything go bad at the same time".

4. Epinions.com

The handful of owners posting here are very happy with the Alen A350 air purifier -- easy-to-change filters and the simple design are cited, though one complains of a "humming" power supply and another calls the A350 an "expensive fan."

5. Amazon.com

As at Epinions, most of the owners posting at Amazon.com are satisfied with the Alen A350 -- but, once again, there are a few complaints about noises issues, such as a humming power supply or an incessant squeak.
