clean air again, October 29, 2009

After doing a lot of research on quality and effectiveness, I chose the Austin air. I purchased one for my upstairs and liked it so much, I recently purchased a second one. I was lucky enough to get the R200-01-01 cheaper on A-Z for 324.00, no tax, 19.00 shipping. It was a steal compared to Amazon's prices and other vendors on the internet. I even got the larger one, not the Jr. size. It was brand new, not refurbished. I also found that some website vendors challenged consumers for a cheaper price any where else and they would honor the price. Check it out. It runs 450.00 everywhere else.

Perfection, February 28, 2009
I bought this product at http://www.breathemoreeasily.com , but wanted to share my feedback in this forum. It has dramaitcally increased the "breatheability" of my air. I suffer from MCS, astham, and severe allergies, and the use of this product has helped tremendously...and even allowed me to reduce the amount of medication I take! It has already paid for itself!
This is the best air filter, February 14, 2009

Hi...I ordered this cleaner but after consideration, felt it was too big for us. The company, Noel, was cordial, friendly, cooperative when I needed to return it. I feel the smaller one room version would be better for us as I'd also like to move it all around the house, including the upstairs. I did a lot of research and felt this was the best on the market. You buy the Austin, you've bought the best.

Great Filter, January 22, 2009

I looked into this a lot last year after I had my baby. The major issues that I found were method of purification, noise, reusable vs disposable filter, and power/size. Method: There was a lot of negative publicity about the Ionic filters because they can release ozone which is poisonous. The new ones use UV, I'm not sure how well they work but I don't think that they are great. The HEPA filters really take the junk out of the air and are pretty much great across the board in terms of air quality. Noise: I looked at the customer reviews online for the various models and people had different things to say about each model. Check for the noise levels at the high med and low fan speeds. disposable filters can get expensive quickly, most need to be changed every 3-6 months. Size: purifiers generally say the size of the room that they can handle. Do not put the purifier in a room bigger than it can handle because it will burn through the filter and won't purify the air well. I ended up going with Austin Air. They are expensive (between 300-550 depending on the model and where you get it, mine was 450$) and they are relatively large and heavy but they are on wheels so they are easily movable. They were repeatedly rated as the best purifiers below the industrial level. Its filters last for five years (they have a guarantee). Mine is almost silent at the lowest setting and pretty loud on the highest setting (sometimes I turn it on high and use it as a white noise machine to get to sleep). It works incredibly well, it removes smells from the room in seconds, and I sneeze less with it around. It pulls in air from four sides and changes over the air in a room pretty quickly. All in all its a great purifier and I'm very happy with it.

The best air filter I ever bought - worth the money!, July 8, 2007

The Austin Air Healthmate is the best I've ever owned. One large unit is enough for our entire house. It reduces (or even eliminates) odors from our cat's litter box and makes the stale air in our home fresher when we return from a couple of days away. We run it in the bedroom at night and wake up feeling healthier than we did before we got one of these. It's quiet on the lowest setting, and a little loud but very powerful on the highest setting. There's easy maintenance (just vacuum the outside once a month). Replacement filters are a little on the expensive side (around $200), but well worth it. The salesperson that sold us ours said we'd have to replace the filter every five years. We run ours constantly and had to replace it after three years. I think the expense is still worth it, as the quality of this product cannot be matched by less expensive purifiers.

1. Air-Purifiers-America.com

Air-Purifiers-America.com tests air purifier models in a test room with a laser particle counter, which measures the air purifier's ability to remove particulate allergens from the air. The Austin Air HealthMate HM-400 removes about 84 percent of particles -- not bad, but not as good as top-ranked models by IQAir and Alen. However, the editors admit they didn't test for odor removal, one of the HealthMate's strong suits thanks to its 15-pound activated carbon core.

2. ConsumerReports.org

The Austin Air HealthMate HM-400 is one of 36 air purifiers tested in a somewhat dated roundup by Consumer Reports. It's measured for its ability to remove particles from the air when operating on both high and low speeds. A ratings chart is included.

3. Allergy Buyers Club.com

AllergyBuyersClub.com calls the Austin Air HealthMate HM-400 a no frills air purifier that is reliable and economical. It is rated as "very good" by this site and features a permanent pre-filter and a true medical HEPA filter surrounded by a carbon mixture which absorbs odors, chemicals and gases. One downside is its 45-pound weight; it is equipped with casters for easier moving, however. This site's editors don't appear to have tested performance with a particle counter.

4. Air-Purifier-Power.com

In this review, air-purifier expert Ed Sherbenou praises the Austin Air HealthMate HM-400, calling it the best HEPA air purifier under $500. Sherbenou particularly likes the Austin Air's 15 pounds of activated carbon with zeolite mix, which adsorbs "over 3,000 different chemicals and odors." Also, he says this machine's five-year cartridge life makes it relatively economical over the long run. He notes, though, that the Austin's activated-carbon and zeolite core makes it inappropriate for baths, saunas or indoor pools, as a moist environment shortens the life of the filter.

5. Reviewboard.com

While it's not always clear to what extent Reviewboard tests the products they feature, their review of the Austin Air HealthMate 400 specifies that the tester uses a laser particle counter to measure performance. The HealthMate 400 is found to be a powerful circulator that cleans the air quickly without producing ozone. This reviewer says the HealthMate performs practically as well as the IQ Air machines but costs much less.
