Honeywell Enviracaire 50250-N

Yeah sure, Hepa filter microns microbes blah blah, but it's the *carbon* filter (aka the Honeywell 38002 Enviracare Universal Replacement Pre-Filter) that keeps the house from smelling like a Bullitt… County Bingo Hall. Change the carbon filter every six weeks or so and you can lie to your children about having given up the Pall Malls. I bought the Honeywell 17000 first; it uses the same pre-filter, it's quieter and it probably helps a little. The 50250, however, is exponentially more effective at eliminating cigarette smoke simply because it filters a massive amount of air. To do that, it has to make a little noise. Fine with me; I haven't heard the Decemberists snivel in six months. And I'm pretty sure the dog stopped barking at the mailman.

The Honeywell 50250 air cleaner does remove the dust, but not cooking odors. The electrical cord is too short, can't be used directly on your good carpeting or rugs, and is noisey on all fan levels. The… unit's large size is definitely good for large rooms. The specifications are good (carbon pre-filter, true HEPA filter and moving large volume of air - but too many issues with this model). The unit's electrical cord is too short for practical use. It is recommended to use it 3 feet from anything; but finding an outlet and clear spot within range of the 6 foot cord is hard - an 8 foor retractable cord would have been great. (manufacture recommends not using extension cords) It is also recommended not to place it on anything you don't want to get dirty from the dust being pulled in (so I place it on a "cheap" rug that I carry around with the unit). The unit exhausts a large volume of cool air. I don't know how it pulls the dust in, as I can watch the dust in the air near the unit get blown away because of the huge amount of exhaust air from the top. It does work, the pre-filter was dirty after the initial two days of full time use. Try to get one with a retracable electrical cord, that isn't as noisey, and can be placed on good carpeting or rugs.

The Honeywell 50250 does the job for me. I breathe easily all night long, the purpose for which it was purchased. I use it only in the room where I sleep and it picks up everything. My wife dried out a wet… newspaper in the oven; the fumes set off the smoke alarm, though there was no fire, and the fumes flooded my room. In a half-hour, my room smelled normal and the smokey odor was completely gone. Great job! Access to the filters is very simple and cleaning is simple also. Highly recommended.
