The Oreck XL Tower Professional Air Purifier is not only less efficient at cleaning the air than cheaper air purifiers in one expert test, but it also emits ozone, which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns can worsen asthma and cause lung damage and other respiratory problems. In addition, its noise ratings are not very good, particularly on high speeds. For the money, a top-rated air purifier such as the Austin Air HealthMate (*Est. $490) would be a better choice.
ConsumerReports.org tests the Oreck XL Tower against the competition, evaluating it in a test lab in comparison with 35 other air purifiers. One owner on Epinions.com posts a detailed review of the Oreck XL Tower, which he says he bought after watching a late-night infomercial. In this earlier review, ConsumerReports.org editors conduct formal lab tests with 36 air purifiers, including the Oreck XL Tower. Each unit is evaluated on its measured ability to remove allergens from the air. Noise levels and ozone production are also measured, and results are disclosed in a ratings chart. However, editors don't include the Oreck XL Tower in their more recent September 2010 air filter ratings.

Reviewer Ed Sherbenou says it's hard to evaluate Oreck products because so much of the information available is based on advertising. He gives Oreck air cleaners in general a vlow grade of 62, citing their ozone emissions.

Only two owners review the Oreck XL Tower Professional Air Purifier, and the decision is split. One owner goes into great depth. He says the Tower moves a lot of air, but it isn't effective and is difficult to clean. The other owner is happy with the Oreck XL Tower but says it's better suited for less square footage than advertised.
