In this case, we're tempted to lend more weigh to Sherbenou's rave about the Sharp Plasmacluster FP-N60CX than to Consumer Reports' tests (which place this air cleaner squarely in the middle of the pack). Sherbenou, who has owned or evaluated dozens of air purifiers, says he's been running his Plasmacluster night and day for over two years, and all he has to do is clean the filter occasionally. He calls the Plasmacluster the best ionizing air purifier on the market, saying it's quiet and efficient. Owners tend to agree, giving this air purifier high marks across the board (though one says it's loud on its highest setting). The Plasmacluster is intended for 300-square-foot rooms, though Sherbenou says 220 square feet is more on the mark. For more recent reviews, please see our latest update on air purifiers.
We were able to find two expert reviews of the Sharp Plasmacluster FP-N60CX: one by Consumer Reports, which includes the Plasmacluster in its November 2007 roundup of air purifiers, and one by Ed Sherbenou of Air-Purifier-Power.com, who's owned this air cleaner for two years and knows its inner workings well. There are also a fair number of comments about the Plasmacluster from owners posting to Amazon.com and Epinions.

The Sharp Plasmacluster FP-N60CX is one of 36 air purifiers tested in the latest roundup by Consumer Reports (November 2007). By injecting allergens into an empty chamber, then measuring air purifier performance at several time intervals on both high and low speeds, editors rate air purifiers for dust and smoke removal, ozone emission and noise level.

Air-purifier expert Ed Sherbenou says he's been running his Sharp Plasmacluster FP-N60CX day and night for two years, and he's obviously a fan. Sherbenou is an avid review of many air purifiers, not just this one, and he does a good job examining models based on their specifications and mechanics. He stops short of measuring performance in a lab setting, however.
