The Whirlpool Whispure 510 runs a distant second to the best-rated budget air purifier, the Honeywell Enviracaire 50250-N (*Est. $195), in reviews. The Whirlpool does include a carbon filter to capture odors -- the Honeywell also uses a carbon prefilter -- and it has four speeds (the Honeywell has three), making it easier to find a good volume level, reviews say. Both the Whirlpool and the Honeywell include a HEPA filter, which experts say is the best way to filter allergens like dust, pollen, pet dander and mold spores. However, the Honeywell has been independently performance-tested by ConsumerReports.org and the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers; the Whirlpool air purifier has not.
We found no independent tests of the Whirlpool Whispure 510's air-cleaning abilities, but its features are extensively evaluated by Ed Sherbenou at Air-Purifier-Power.com. ConsumerGuide.com also reviews the Whispure 510's features, but editors there don't seem to be as knowledgeable -- or critical -- as Sherbenou. We found owner reviews at Epinions.com.

Reviewer Ed Sherbenou recommends the Whirlpool Whispure 510, but it doesn't make his list of the 10 best air purifiers. He doesn't conduct performance testing with a particle counter, but he does take a look at third-party reviews. Sometimes Sherbenou takes air purifiers apart to examine their mechanics, but his write-up for the Whirlpool doesn't appear to be based on a hands-on examination.

All but one of the 16 or so owners posting comments to Epinions.com are pleased with their Whirlpool Whispure 510 air purifiers. Several remark that it's reasonably quiet, and that it does a particularly good job with cat hair. The one critic is upset because it was difficult to order replacement filters.
