Phil & Teds Dash

This convertible stroller's positives don't make up for major design flaws that contradict its substantial price tag

Pros
  • Convertible for multiples
  • Narrow frame
  • All-terrain wheels
Cons
  • Poor steering
  • Poor braking system
  • Short canopy

Phil & Teds, one of the most popular stroller brands, is known for its single-to-double convertible inline models. The Dash (*Est. $550, $100 for doubles kit) is the brand's "urban" offering, featuing a unique trigger-fold and a hand brake. At a width of 24.4 inches, this stroller may feel a bit wide for a single, but it's substantially narrower than most double strollers on the market.

In reviews, the Dash gets mixed feedback. Its sleek design and easy single-to-double conversion are highlights; parents also appreciate the plastic footrest, which is easier to clean than the fabric ones on similar strollers. The well-padded seat is cushy and has a flat recline, but reviewers say it doesn't sit fully upright, which can be very uncomfortable for older children. At 26 pounds, the stroller may be light for a double but feels very heavy when used as a single. The same is true for storage: It's ample until the doubles kit is used, which reduces capacity to virtually nothing.

Several users also cite problems with the front wheel, which wobbles noticeably when going downhill. The manufacturer offers a washer that can be used to remedy the issue, but parents say it's a hassle to have to fix what's apparently a known design flaw. Moreover, between the wheel and the weight, the Dash is difficult to steer one-handed. Its short canopy also draws criticism. Even more pressing is that some parents say they feel unsafe pushing the Dash: There's no foot brake, and some users say the hand brake is decidedly difficult to engage. Reviewers call this a lovely stroller with several positive aspects, but its major design issues mean it isn't worth the substantial price tag.

We found first-rate user reviews of the Phil & Teds Dash at Amazon.com and Australian-based ProductReview.com.au, both of which feature feedback from more than 25 owners each. There's a short but balanced review at AOL's ParentDish.com, and several blogs offer detailed comments. "Baby Bargains," the popular baby gear review book by Denise and Alan Fields, provides a good summary of the Phil & Teds brand in general.

Amazon.com features nearly 30 reviews of the Phil & Teds Dash, and owner feedback is mixed. Out of all the Phil & Teds stroller models, the Dash receives some of the harshest criticism. While some users say this is a high-quality, compact stroller (particularly when used as a double), others say it costs more than what it's worth. Several parents note problems with the front wheel and say the stroller is difficult to steer.

2. ProductReview.com.au

This Australian consumer-review site features more than 30 evaluations of the Phil & Teds Dash. The stroller earns only an average 2.9 stars out of 5, with several owners citing problems with the hand brake and front wheel. They also complain that the front seat doesn't sit fully upright. While it's a sleek stroller, many reviewers say it simply isn't worth the hefty price.

3. ParentDish.com

AOL's ParentDish.com offers several reviews of top-selling strollers. While the comments are insightful, there's no information as to how each model was tested and no rating system, making it difficult to compare one stroller to the next. The reviewer praises the Phil & Teds Dash for its narrow frame, but says storage is limited when it's used as a double and learning to fold it takes time.

4. MommysBabyGear.com

This blog provides a surprisingly detailed and balanced review of the Phil & Teds Dash. The reviewer lists several pros of the stroller, including its large storage basket, smooth ride and comfortable seat. However, she says the Dash feels heavy to push and the front wheel wobbles when going downhill. She also warns that once the doubles kit is attached, the large storage basket is reduced to virtually nothing.

5. BobbysBest.com

BobbysBest.com provides relatively detailed reviews of several popular strollers. It offers feedback on the Phil & Teds Dash and a comparison chart to help readers see the differences between various Phil & Teds models. The Dash earns praise for its trigger-activated fold and narrower frame; a major drawback is the canopy, which seems much flimsier than that on other Phil & Teds strollers.
