Security Suites
Security suites can be a good value
Internet security suites have advantages and disadvantages when compared with individual programs. They are usually cheaper than buying separate standalone programs. If you plan to buy antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall software, they are certain to be cheaper. They don't all coexist with free anti-spyware programs, but otherwise, they greatly reduce the likelihood of software and system conflicts. If you are uncomfortable with installing and using software, a single program is an elegant solution. If you want extras, like spam filters and parental controls (both are controversial and not completely effective), a suite gives you everything.
Experts say most Internet security suites are not as effective as standalone programs, especially at preventing spyware. They include aggressive and sometimes intrusive firewalls that you may not need (primarily if you have a hardware firewall -- note that most wireless routers include one). The firewalls are not optional installations with suites.
This year's standout Internet security suite is Norton Internet Security 2009 (*Est. $45). Unlike in previous years, when it had a reputation for causing software conflicts and system drag, reviewers say this year's release is slim and speedy. Norton is also the first full-featured suite to be competitive with standalone programs for spyware detection and removal. PC Magazine's Neil Rubenking says Norton's spyware removal scores just behind front-running Spyware Doctor. Tested on commercial keyloggers, Norton leads the pack, significantly outperforming last year's high scorer, Zone Alarm Internet Security.
A few other suites get solid reviews as well. Panda Internet Security 2009 (*Est. $35), BitDefender Total Security 2009 (*Est. $50), and Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 (*Est. $50) all have their fans, and all include anti-spyware and adware detection tools. Full details are in our report on Internet security software.
