G Data Antivirus 2010

Pros
  • Unmatched virus detection
  • Clean look
  • Inexpensive
Cons
  • Sparse technical support
  • Somewhat slow, resource-heavy
  • Not for novice users

Testers concur that G Data Antivirus 2010 is a top performer in terms of effectiveness among current virus detection programs. The German-made program uses two separate virus-hunting engines, those of BitDefender and avast!, to offer what is felt by many to be unparalleled protection. Tests also suggest that G Data tends to have fewer false positives than competing antivirus software.

However, there is a down side. Though reviewers like the clean interface of G Data Antivirus, the user experience isn't always as intuitive as they would like. Users are most disappointed by the lack of good customer support, especially in light of the fact that the software is designed for the more technically minded. Though not quite as powerful, software like Norton AntiVirus 2010 (Discontinued) is, reviewers say, more user-friendly.

PC World gives one of the few in-depth reviews of G Data Antivirus 2010. AV-Comparatives.org, an independent testing site, has copious information on G Data's technical performance. Download.com, a prolific reviewer of antivirus software, neglects G Data's software, but there are some helpful user reviews posted on the site nevertheless.

1. PC World

PC World's round-up of the best antivirus software puts G Data Antivirus 2010 in the top spot. Reviewer Erik Larkin says that virus detection is very good, and he also likes the well-designed interface. However, he finds that it's not the most intuitive antivirus software to use, and that it needs prompting for what should be hands-off tasks. Ultimately, Larkin recommends G Data for technically minded users who know what they're doing.
