Kaspersky Antivirus 2013 is undeniably one of the top antivirus software products on the market, providing defenses against viruses, spyware, Trojans, rootkits and other threats. While it performs exceedingly well in lab tests, however, Kaspersky comes in just a hair behind Bitdefender, the best-reviewed antivirus software.
Out with the old, in with the new. Kaspersky Antivirus 2013's installation process is simple, quick and thorough. In addition to removing malware and conflicting security software immediately, Download.com notes that in its test, installation only took three seconds and was finished within two minutes. The software, which only runs on PCs, uses 480 MB of space and is available both in digital download and disc (a handy backup disc, available in every package, enables malware removal without knocking out the operating system).
Owners with infected PCs will appreciate a tool that scans and removes threats prior to installation, which paves the way for an easy installation of Kaspersky Antivirus. Several customers said they could only install the software after running the virus removal tool that got rid of conflicting antivirus software -- simply uninstalling the other software from the computer didn't work. Some Windows 8 users faced conflicts with Microsoft's Security Essentials. Kaspersky had trouble installing in Safe Mode in a PCMag.com test, but again the removal tool fixed the issue.
Extra protection for your online accounts. Kaspersky Antivirus 2013's software is customizable, and it's loaded with features. In addition to outstanding anti-malware, it runs updates constantly in the background and includes well-tested safeguards to protect you online, such as anti-phishing defenses, a keyboard that lets you safely enter data and cloud protection. While scans may take some time, the software limits its resources when a laptop isn't plugged in so that it won't drain the battery.
Reviewers rave about the software's new security protections -- namely Kaspersky's Automatic Exploit Prevention, which, like other features, updates daily. "It's hard to overstate how critical stopping exploits can be to stopping large-quantity cash thefts from online banks," CNET's Download.com notes. Professional reviewers are also impressed with the interface, which includes a security status icon on the desktop that changes color when your machine is at risk. (Green indicates the system is fine, yellow is a warning, red is critical.)
Impressive detection hampered by occasional sluggishness. Experts praise Kaspersky Antivirus 2013's excellent malware removal capabilities, multiple layers of protection (you can run special scans and its Internet security is strong) and intuitive interface. Independent testing labs rate Kaspersky among the best-performing antivirus software, and it scores well with professional reviewers. PCMag.com praises Kaspersky Antivirus 2013's "top-notch phishing protection," which keeps your computer safe from hackers trying to steal your username, passwords and financial account information. PCMag.com advises keeping the Kaspersky Security Network on at all times to ensure paramount security.
Numerous experts and consumers maintain Kaspersky Antivirus 2013 runs slowly, however, causing it to fall just a hair short of Bitdefender's top scores. Download.com testers found the average scan took over eight minutes, far exceeding the three minutes the software had estimated and proving one of the slower scan times for antivirus software. Boot and shutdown times are competitive with industry averages. Consumers say they're willing to be patient given Kaspersky Antivirus' robust protection, while a handful complained the software took up too much memory and occasionally crashed computers.
Review Credibility: Excellent AV-Comparatives.org, which tests antivirus software monthly, gave Kaspersky its highest Advanced+ certification in its 2012 tests. It tests Internet security suites but antivirus products from the same manufacturer are similar, with Internet security offering extra cyber protection features. Kaspersky fell just short of winning the Product of the Year award, which went to Bitdefender, but the two won top marks for malware detection and removal. File detection, blocking phishing rates and removal of existing malware were among the categories tested.
