December 2007. Norton is by far the best-selling antivirus program, and reviewers say Norton AntiVirus 2008 is excellent at detecting viruses. However, half of all users posting to review sites complain that Norton AntiVirus slows their computer to a crawl, that it conflicts with other software and that it exercises a high degree of control over your computer. Only a quarter of posters give this program a high rating. For the same price, experts say, you're better off with the highly rated Kaspersky AntiVirus 7.0 (*est. $40) or ESET NOD32 3.0 (*est. $35).

Norton AntiVirus 2008's effectiveness is evaluated at the test site Checkvir.com. A trip to CNet.com and Amazon.com is also useful for gauging expert and user opinions of this software. Those reviews go into greater depth about system drag and other problems.

1. CheckVir.com

In its most recent test, CheckVir.com judges the ability of antivirus software to detect and destroy nearly a thousand common malware threats. Norton AntiVirus 2008 gets the "standard" certification here, meaning it detected all threats and prevented them from loading on the test system. Ease of use is not evaluated.

2. CNET

Although Robert Vamosi says antivirus protection compares well to the class-leading Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7, Norton is a larger program by six times -- meaning it takes up more of your computer's resources. Editors aren't impressed by this year's version.

This review isn't a review as much as a product description. Editor Roger Gann writes that Symantec trimmed down the heft of this program since last year.
