Panda Antivirus 2007

pros
  • Panda Anti-Virus 2007 costs less than half of some other antivirus software, and a single license allows you to install it on two computers. The user interface is simple and friendly, according to some reviewers, but not others. Panda Antivirus 2007 scans quickly and makes light use of system resources.
cons
  • Panda Antivirus 2007 is exceptionally poor at catching Trojan horses, according to lab tests. It can't be set to scan a system automatically, and reviews say the program is better at detecting than removing malware.

Panda Antivirus 2007 is a below-average program according to reviews. It has no ability to automatically schedule scans, which reviewers see as a major and nearly unique disadvantage. Panda is good against some types of threats, but other programs are better at detecting malware, and Panda doesn't handle infected files very well in tests. We found better reviews overall for F-Secure Anti-Virus 2007 (*est. $65) and Kaspersky Anti-Virus (*est. $60).

We found Panda Antivirus 2007 included in roundup reviews at PC World, PCAdvisor.co.uk and Computer Shopper. PC Magazine has a good single-product review of Panda Antivirus 2007. The Columbia Daily Tribune has an enthusiastic, but unsupported review. ConsumerGuide.com's review competently covers usage issues, but also cites no performance test results. A writeup at 6StarReviews.com falsely implies that tech support is free, and the review doesn't cover the most important issues. Consumer Reports and TopTenReviews.com only review the previous version of Panda Antivirus 2007.

Our Sources

1. PC World

In conjunction with AV-Test.org, PC World tests eight antivirus applications under Microsoft Windows Vista. The reviews are comprehensive and detailed, except that compatibility with leading third-party anti-spyware and firewall programs isn't tested. Panda Antivirus 2007 is judged average at detecting malware, but not very good at disinfecting or removing it. System slowing is minimal, which is a plus.

2. Computer Shopper

British magazine Computer Shopper directly compares a dozen leading antivirus programs, including Panda Antivirus. Performance evaluation is fine, as the testing produces a useful variation in results, although they vary from other organization's test results. The reviews do not address compatibility with other security programs and rarely mention affect on system resources, and ratings are often out of synch with results and commentary. Panda Antivirus 2007 catches some types of threats very well, but is inadequate for others.

3. PC Advisor

The PCAdvisor.co.uk review is an abridged version of PC World's review. The same writer wrote the reviews for both magazines using the same set of test data. PCAdvisor.co.uk reviews more security programs than PC World does, but PC World reveals more of the test results online. Panda Antivirus 2007 is included.

4. PCMag.com

PC Magazine reviews most of the Internet security suites on the market, but only reviews the latest version of one standalone antivirus program: Panda Antivirus 2007. Rubenking says Panda Antivirus is fast and unobtrusive, as well as inexpensive. However, he finds its protection skills and performance to be sub-par. The application crashed a couple of times while scanning for malware on a test computer. Panda Antivirus 2007 cannot automatically schedule and run scans.

5. Columbia Daily Tribune

Freelance computer writer Scott May reviews the three Panda Software products that include Panda Antivirus 2007. He says, "The best buy for many users might be the company's basic package, Panda Antivirus 2007." He has personally used Panda for several years since converting from Norton. May is particularly pleased with Panda Antivirus 2007's improved speed. It also taxes system resources less than earlier versions. However, the interface is still difficult to navigate; key features and options are hidden, and you can't schedule automatic scan. No competing software is tested or rated.
