Apple reliability, warranty and customer service
All Apple computers come with one-year parts and labor limited warranties. Apple provides free tech support only for 90 days, which is less than the industry norm of one year. Given the price of Apple computers, multiple reviewers say the 90-day limit is pretty stingy on Apple's part. You can buy an upgraded warranty from Apple (or another retailer) that extends tech support, like the AppleCare Protection Plan. This plan extends global repair coverage and free phone support for three years from the date of purchase, and the price varies based on the computer. Retailers are likely to have lower prices on protection plans, giving you the added benefit of having two companies that may resolve your problems. On the other hand, Apple's tech support is extraordinarily good, according to all surveys that we've seen.
Several articles say the Apple Stores will provide free tech support for anyone at their Genius Bar. You have to make a reservation for the Genius Bar, but Apple says it's "the place to go for advice, insight, and hands-on technical support for your Mac or iPod." Apple currently operates over 200 stores across the country. You can find a complete list at Apple.com.
In PCMag.com's 2009 reliability and service survey, Apple laptops and desktops were clear winners in the Readers' Choice awards. Tech support also outpaces that of other makers. Results are similar for desktops in large surveys, but some smaller surveys seem to indicate more issues. One clear advantage that Macs enjoy is relative immunity from malware and viruses. With PCs, many apparent hardware problems are actually infestations of malware. This is much less of a problem with Apple computers.
