APS Cameras: Reviews

Reviews say that APS photography is on its way out, and only two manufacturers are still represented in the U.S. market. Overall, APS cameras hold little overall advantage over digital cameras. However, we did find many… accolades for the Canon Elph Sport. With its waterproof housing, it takes better underwater photos than disposable underwater cameras, and reviews say its wide-aspect and panoramic shooting modes are especially appealing to snorkelers and divers looking to capture undersea landscapes. It does not have a zoom lens.

This inexpensive APS camera doesn't have a zoom lens, but it does have a fun, colorful, funky design meant to appeal to kids and teens. It's a little easier to load APS cameras with film, and it's more difficult to… accidentally expose film. The Q1 can shoot in normal and wide-aspect mode, but unlike the Canon Elph Sport, it can't take panoramic shoots and isn't waterproof. A related camera, the Q1 Zoom (*est. $50) does have a 2X zoom, but can only shoot in normal aspect, negating some of the advantage of APS.

Although its price approaches that of entry-level digital cameras, and exceeds that of comparable 35mm film cameras, reviews say the Elph Z3 is a good choice for those who want something more sophisticated than the… Fujifilm Q1. The Z3 can shoot in normal, wide-aspect and panoramic modes—all without changing film. It has a timer, three-point autofocus and red-eye reduction in addition to a 2.3X zoom (23.5-54mm focal length).
