Broken Dash Navigator, August 28, 2009
I received a broken navigation system. It was sent back for refund as I was very disappointed. This navigation system was not defective. I contacted Dash and they informed me the seller knew it would not work. These systems holds accounts with Dash. It could not be registered with Dash. Terrible service.
Worst GPS Device on the Market!, August 8, 2009

This is the worst GPS ever. It can't find 60% of the addresses. It doesn't know how to take the fastest route. It can't find Highways that have been open for 15 years! It has 100's of options but only 1 or 2 actually function. Your trip resets and stops itself constantly. It directs you to make u-turns instead of just going the correct route. This thing is a JOKE!! I owned an old Magellan from 99' and it was 20 times the GPS that the 2009 Dash is. This Dash SUCKS!!! DO NOT BUY THIS GPS!!!!!!!

My DASH unit hasn't been working for some time - no help, July 19, 2009

I liked the DASH when I got it, and I liked the Yahoo local search feature.

My DASH hasn't been responding to my touch for months, and no one at DASH has been able to help or is even responding to my requests.

They are still charging my monthly subscription.

I would stay away from them in future.

Thanks.
Overall don't understand all the controversy over this device..., April 22, 2009

I found out about Dash a little late and considered not buying it due to Dash getting out of the hardware business, however the concept and the reviews seemed promising. I read a lot about the shortfalls and expected those to be something I lived with after getting it and setting it up. Common complaints I read were the traffic service not functioning well, the Yahoo Local search being down a lot, slow startup, inaccurate or silly routing, etc. I have not had any of these problems and wonder if these reviews were written before several updates that have taken place or just due to user error (more common than you might think). This thing is worlds better than our Garmin (C580) we're retiring and at the price we paid as a result of Amazon clearing them, it is a steal compared to any of the current Garmins or TomToms that still do not offer a comprehensive and logical 2-way data stream service. A new $800 unit from Garmin doesn't do much more than our 4 year old Garmin did except cost more and have a bigger screen. Anyway, thus far my wife and I are very satisfied and it house taken us on some unique routes and gotten us out of a lot of traffic already. I would imagine if you don't live in a major metro this is not the unit for you, but I think I got a bargain and hope the service sticks around for many years to come.

Great Idea - Poor implementation., April 5, 2009

There are 2 components to a dash GPS - the hardware and the service. First the bad, the device is awful. It is huge, slow, and just not user friendly. Once you use a Garmin Nuvi, you will be greatly disappointed with all the basic features that this just doesn't offer. The service is where you begin to see how GPS should be. An always connected device that can do internet searches for what you you are near or looking for. Also being able to use a far more robust system to determine traffic by every Dash reporting back to dash central with road conditions. The flaw of this concept is the low adoption rate of the dash has meant that results are not great. All of this forced Dash to make a hard decision. Kill off the consumer based business and focus on a product that could be sold to other GPS manufacturers. It was a tough choice, but probably the only one that would save the company. Buying a Dash GPS today, may be a bit of a risk, but at least it is a lot cheaper then the $600 MSRP that they went for a a little over a year ago

1. GPS Tracklog

Blogger Rich Owings tests the Dash Express for more than a month and concludes it is "the ultimate commuter GPS." Owings' review contains nuts-and-bolts information -- like the costs of Dash's various service plans -- and plenty of photos and screen shots, as well as Owings' opinion of the Dash's special features.

This performance-oriented review of the Dash Express includes a chart listing every feature, alongside the reviewers' step-by-step analysis of more than a dozen different aspects of the Dash Express. Based on their 500-mile test, reviewers conclude that it's strength isn't navigation -- it's keeping you out of traffic jams.

3. Business Week

BusinessWeek calls the Dash Express "the most interesting thing to happen to personal navigation in a few years," thanks to its Internet connectivity and crowd-sourced traffic. Reviewer Arik Hesseldahl tests the Dash Express all over the New York/New Jersey area and finds all of his routes automatically color-coded with traffic information gleaned from other Dash units on the road.

4. Orlando Sentinel

Etan Horowitz does a good job outlining the real-world usefulness of the Dash Express's unique features, based on his road test for the Orlando Sentinel. Horowitz stops short of recommending the Dash, noting it has some problems with basic navigation. However, Horowitz concludes that those problems may be fixed through software updates.

5. The Wall Street Journal

The Wall Street Journal's Walter S. Mossberg tests the Dash Express before its release, so there are no other Dash users on the road to provide traffic data. Instead, Mossberg used a two-person "network" for his test: himself and a colleague. Mossberg reports that his Dash did indeed quickly color-code the traffic tie-ups he might encounter, using information from his colleague's Dash.
