The Garmin nuvi 3790LMT is identical to the top-rated Garmin nuvi 3790T (*Est. $250) , but it adds free map updates for the life of the unit. Several top expert sources recommend the nuvi 3790LMT alongside -- or instead of -- its slightly less expensive sibling. Both units feature a slim, iPhone-like case and multitouch screen, free traffic alerts for the life of the unit (supported by pop-up ads) and the ability to "learn" local traffic patterns to pick more efficient routes. They're also voice-commandable, although this feature doesn't always work well in tests. Experts -- and most owners -- overwhelmingly recommend these models, but some owners report problems, such as the navigator freezing up or having trouble locking onto satellites.

GPSLodge.com, GPSTracklog.com and ConsumerReports.org all conduct thorough tests of the Garmin nuvi 3790LMT, although the first two sites provide much more description than ConsumerReports.org does. Experts lavish praise on this GPS unit, but owners at Amazon.com are more critical.
