TomTom One 125

The TomTom One 125 is TomTom's bottom-of-the-line navigator. It offers no widescreen and no spoken street names (e.g. it says "Turn left in 100 feet" rather than "Turn left on Elm Street in 100 feet.") It's just like the TomTom One 130 (*Est. $115), except the One 125 includes only maps of the U.S., not Canada. Although one expert tester says she particularly misses the spoken street names, people who own the One 125 usually say they get along just fine without the extra perks. However, some users do report getting bad directions and poor customer service from TomTom. The all-in-one EasyPort mount is supposed to make it easy to stow and carry the One 125, but expert testers report difficulties. However it's never the same problem twice: one says the unit popped out of its cradle, another says the mount may not allow enough positioning options, while a third says the design takes some getting used to. Overall, reviews are likely to recommend Garmin's more full-featured budget models, such as the Garmin nuvi 265T (*Est. $185), which includes free traffic information for the life of the unit.

GPSLodge.com and CNET both fully test the TomTom One 125 and offer clear buying advice. ConsumerReports.org doesn't test the One 125, but it does offer some buying advice based on tests of similar TomTom units -- and unlike most ConsumerReports.org content, the article is free. Amazon.com and Sears.com both sell the One 125 and invite owners to review it, but reviews at Amazon.com are more critical and thorough.
