Owner reviews describe the Chicco KeyFit as an easy-to-use and highly adjustable infant car seat. Users also perceive the Chicco KeyFit as "lightweight," although at 9 pounds without the base, it's still heavier than the best infant car seat in reviews, the 7.5-pound Graco SnugRide (*Est. $80 to $150, depending on model). The Chicco KeyFit also accommodates infants only up to 22 pounds, while its sibling Chicco KeyFit 30 (*Est. $180) can serve babies up to 8 pounds heavier and costs only about $10 more. Otherwise they are essentially the same product with the same downside in reviews -- some complaints that the fabric can make the babies uncomfortably hot. Like all the infant car seats included in ConsumerSearch's coverage, however, the Chicco KeyFit scores well for safety.

ConsumerReports.org is the go-source for infant car seat reviews because it does independent testing of each model it covers, and the Chicco KeyFit is one of those. At this writing, Viewpoints.com has more owner reviews of the Chicco KeyFit than Amazon.com, but you might also check our coverage of the Chicco KeyFit 30 for links to owner reviews of that very similar model.

Our Sources

1. ConsumerReports.org

The Chicco KeyFit is one of 11 infant car seats tested and ranked in a chart. A subscription is required to see the coverage, however.

2. Chicago Tribune

This investigative report is somewhat flawed because the government testing was actually meant to evaluate the safety of cars, not the car seats. The seats were not tested an equal amount of times or under a control situation. The Chicco KeyFit, for what it's worth, passed its only test.

3. Viewpoints.com

About 90 owner reviews combine give the Chicco KeyFit a very high average score, only about 5 percent dinging it with a negative rating. Most of the reviews say the Chicco KeyFit is easy to use.

4. Amazon.com

Just a few owner reviews weigh in on the Chicco KeyFit, not enough to draw any fair conclusions, and there are few details in any of them. More owner reviews should be posted over time.
