Infant Car Seats
by Editors of ConsumerReports.org
Our AssessmentConsumerReports.org, the only U.S. non-government organization to perform independent crash testing for car seats, has included 13 of the most popular infant car seats in this undated report. Editors rank the seats according to how well they perform in lab tests for crash protection, ease of use and fit to vehicle.
Infant Car Seats
by Denise and Alan Fields
Our AssessmentWith an emphasis on value, safety and durability, this book provides useful shopping tips and recommendations on dozens of baby products. The authors conduct hands-on testing and interviews with parents, manufacturers and retailers to rate products. Write-ups are very thorough, including data regarding manufacturers' recall history. No crash tests are conducted, but information on ease of use, manufacturer reliability and child comfort is very helpful.
Babble Best: Infant Car Seats
by Kate Bayless
Our AssessmentCar seats aren't crash tested, but the 12 car seats are otherwise rated for ease of installation, carrying ease and seat weight. Also factored into the ratings are crash test scores from ConsumerReports.org and ease of use and fit-to-vehicle ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Kate Bayless uses three pint-sized human testers as well: a newborn who weighs 7 pounds and is 19 inches tall; a "chunky" baby (a 5-month-old who weighs 18 pounds and is 19 inches tall); and an 11-month-old who weighs 25 pounds and is 30 inches tall.
2009 Child Safety Seat Ease of Use Ratings
by Editors of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
Our AssessmentThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tests child car seats only for ease of use (including evaluation of labels and instructions, installation features and securing the child) and assigns a rating for individual categories and overall performance. Even more helpful, parents can click on each model to see a photo, comments and a detailed report about how each performs in testing. The ratings are for 2009, so they are a bit dated. Several car seats receive 4 out of 5 stars for ease of use; however, The First Years Via is the only seat that gets a perfect score.
Infant Car Seats
by Toby McAdams and Bradley Sorock
Our AssessmentCarSeatData.org has a great compatibility database for car seats and cars. There is also a nice report detailing the various kinds of car seats and recommendations from site founder Toby McAdams, a longtime car seat reviewer. CarSeatData.org is now run by Bradley Sorock, who took over in the fall of 2006. However, it is not clear whether the site is being still updated, as the database in many instances contains popular models only up to 2007. The forum section does have recent questions and an active moderator. In terms of infant car seats, the honors are given to two seats, the Graco SnugRide and the Baby Trend Rigid Latch-Loc. Both seats are praised for having five-point harnesses and for being very adjustable. However, both recommended seats are older versions.
Infant Car Seat Reviews
by Contributors to Viewpoints.com
Our AssessmentThis website allows visitors to post reviews and encourages contributors to identify themselves as "looking for value" or "busy mom," among other traits. About 30 car seats are listed here, and some get hundreds of reviews. Although average ratings are listed, they are so similar overall that it's hard to tell at a glance what model might be the best choice. Among infant seats, the Chicco KeyFit and Graco SnugRide are rated highest. The site also features a pretty thorough buyer's guide, including information on choosing the right model, car seat laws and finding a car seat on a budget.
Infant Car Seats
by Contributors to Amazon.com
Our AssessmentParents posting at Amazon.com like the Graco SnugRide for a number of reasons, specifically the light weight, the detachable base that can remain in the car and the simple nature of the seat compared to competitors. The Chico KeyFit 30 also receives many positive reviews, with an average rating of over 4 out of 5 stars.
Car Seat Video Reviews
by Contributors to ExpoTV.com
Our AssessmentThis site features video reviews of various products, including infant car seats, and also allows owners to discuss the products. On the downside, some reviewers focus on appearance rather than performance. Most car seats have just one video review to date, although the Graco SnugRide has more than 30 reviews. Still, it's clear many of the reviewers have a lot of personal experience using the car seats, which they are eager to share. One dad, for example, notes that the Graco SnugRide tipped to the side when his baby hit around 18 pounds.
Infant Car Seats
by Contributors to Target.com
Our AssessmentTarget.com is a good source for parent-written reviews on car seats, but the infant car seat reviews are spotty. The Graco SnugRide car seat receives more than 300 reviews, with overall above-average ratings, although a few owners say the handle is hard to adjust. Other car seats receive far fewer reviews, but there are still enough to make this site helpful. More than 20 reviews can be found for the new Peg-Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30-30. The most common complaint about all car seats is that they sometimes don't fit well in a given car.
Infant Car Seats
by Contributors to ToysRUs.com
Our AssessmentThe reviews are a bit sporadic on this site, and several of the infant car seats have only one review posted. Although you can see the overall ratings for each car seat, you can't tell how many reviews it has received until you click on it. For some of the most popular models (like the Graco SnugRide) there are several reviews and some good parent/user insights. Parent reviewers give mixed reviews to the Maxi-Cosi Mico, however, which averages 3 out of 5 stars in more than 150 reviews. Many complaints relate to the car seat being too bulky or too difficult to install or remove from its base.
Car Seat Reviews
by Heather Corley
Our AssessmentHeather Corley, About.com's guide to baby products, reviews three car seats: the Britax Chaperone, the Chicco KeyFit 30 and the Safety 1st Complete Air. Each review is detailed and includes "what I like" and "what I don't like" sections on the car seats' features. Corley concludes that all seats are solid choices for parents. Best Car Seats for Babies and Toddlers
by Jessica Hartshorn
Our AssessmentParents magazine recommends 13 car seats for babies and toddlers. However, only very brief descriptions are given, seats are not ranked, and no information is given as to why any particular seat is best. Only three of the top picks are infant seats.
Infant Car Seat Reviews
by Contributors to Epinions.com
Our AssessmentMost of the infant car seats at Epinions.com receive only a handful of reviews. However, the Graco SnugRide has over 60 user reviews and an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Epinions.com is best used as a secondary resource for those who already have a specific infant car seat in mind.
Top 3 Infant Car Seats
by Robin Elise Weiss
Our AssessmentRobin Elise Weiss, About.com's guide to pregnancy, discusses several infant car seats, including the Graco SnugRide. However, it's not clear if these car seats were evaluated in person. Rather, Weiss says they are "top picks from experts." An accompanying buyer's guide is helpful. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)

Our AssessmentHeather Corley, About.com's guide to baby products, picks five car seat based on her experience as a child-passenger safety technician. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)
Child Car Seats
by Editors of Which?
Our AssessmentWhich? is a British consumer magazine similar to ConsumerReports.org in the U.S. Which? has an excellent comparative review of car seats with ratings based on crash test results. Because this site is based in the U.K., none of the tested car seats are available in the U.S., but Which? is great for European parents.
Car Seats from Birth
by Editors of Mumsnet.com
Our AssessmentMumsnet.com is a British site with helpful information about car seats. European car seats have different features than U.S. car seats. If you're a European consumer, this is the place to look; if not, the site still has a lot of useful safety information that you may find helpful.
Infant Car Seats
by Editors of ConsumerGuide.com
Our AssessmentConsumerGuide.com chooses the Graco SnugRide, Britax Companion, Chicco KeyFit 30, Peg-Perego Primo Viaggio Tri-Fix, Baby Trend Flex Loc and Graco Infant SafeSeat (Step 1) as best buys. The expert reviews are detailed and helpful, but it's not clear that any of these car seats were tested in any way.
