Bottom Line

With a weight range of 12 to 45 pounds and an ergonomic design, the Ergobaby Original can hold infants to toddlers. Parent and expert reviewers love its ability to convert from front to back or hip positions. However, many wish that the baby could face forward in the front carry position and some say the optional infant insert (*Est. $25) required for babies under 12 pounds is uncomfortable.

Comfort

Puts the baby's weight on the hips, not the shoulders. The Ergobaby Original was the first soft-structured carrier to move the bulk of the baby's weight from the shoulders to the hips. This ergonomic design, an padded waist belt, and widely spaced shoulder straps allow most parents to wear the Ergobaby for hours without discomfort. The Ergobaby also carries babies in a wide-legged position that experts say is healthier for spine, pelvic and hip development. While most parents say that their babies and toddlers are comfortable, it does not allow babies to face out toward the world in the front-carry position. An optional insert (*Est. $25) is required to use the Ergobaby carrier with a newborn infant who needs head support. Many parents and experts say that this insert is too cumbersome and hot for their baby. The Ergobaby gets the most positive feedback for babies from 4 months old and up.

Performance

Easy to strap on for most, but not all. Most parents say that it is easy to secure the locking straps on the Ergobaby Original and adjust them for size, making this a good choice for different sized parents. Some say that they can't secure the top shoulder strap without help, and many say that while it is easy to load their baby in the front carry position, they can't load the baby on their back without help.

Mothers report that the Ergobaby is great for breastfeeding thanks in part to its front-facing carry position and the lack of fabric between the baby and the wearer.

Parents love the Ergobaby's sleeping hood, which can also be used as a sun cover in the front carry position, and appreciate the front stash pocket that can hold a few small necessities. Users also say that the relatively lightweight carrier is compact and easy to travel with.

Durability

Made for the long haul. Thanks to its high weight ratings, good weight distribution and multiple carry options, parents say that the Ergobaby Original is a comfortable way to carry babies well into toddlerhood. While the front carry position is the best known, parents can turn the carrier for hip and back carry as the baby grows. The Ergobaby doesn't get any complaints about durability either -- most admire the quality of its cotton construction and the organic cotton models draw particular praise. It's machine washable and comes with a one-year warranty.

There are a number of warnings from both consumers and the manufacturer about the prevalence of counterfeit Ergobaby carriers. To help combat this issue, Ergobaby has a list of authorized retailers that sell the authentic product.

Review Credibility: Excellent The Ergobaby Original comes in fifth out of 15 baby carriers tested, with an overall ranking of 69 out of 100. Ellis notes that the Ergobaby does an excellent job of distributing the baby's weight on the parent's hips and only minimally on the shoulders, as well as supporting the child. It has a few flaws that keep it from being their top model. She wishes the baby could ride facing forward, and they say that loading the baby on the back is very difficult. Ellis says that it is a very well-made carrier.

Review Credibility: Good This reviewer and experienced hiker compares the Ergobaby Original to the BabyBjorn Original carrier. The reviewer uses both carriers for hiking and everyday use. The writer says that the Ergobaby distributes weight better than the BabyBjorn, but says that it is easier to buckle the straps on the BabyBjorn. They note that while the Ergobaby won't allow a child to face forward, the fact that the carrier allows you to carry the child on your back makes it ideal for use with toddlers.
