IKEA Gulliver

Best basic baby crib
- Constructed of solid beech or birch
- Inexpensive
- Converts to a toddler day bed
- Doesn't convert to a full-size bed
- Spartan look
- Mattress not included
The Ikea Gulliver crib is rated highly by several expert reviews for its affordability and durability. The white-finish version of this crib (*Est. $100) is constructed from solid beech with a tinted acrylic lacquer. The natural-finish version of this crib (*Est. $140) is constructed from solid birch, a durable hardwood, with a clear acrylic lacquer. The finishes on both are non-toxic. While the Ikea Gulliver is a very basic crib, some experts say that basic is best. One side can be removed when a baby is old enough to climb in and out of bed independently, so it can be used as a toddler day bed. However, this crib doesn't convert into a regular bed. If you're looking for a truly convertible crib, consider the Ikea Leksvik (*Est. $160), which is similar in price and converts to a toddler bed, although this model is available in only one finish. For a greater selection of finishes, try the DaVinci Emily 4-in-1 Convertible Crib (*Est. $250), which is more expensive but converts to a toddler bed, daybed or even a full-size bed with the purchase of a separate rail kit.
