Baby bath pads are cushions or pillows designed for infant bathing. Infants can rest comfortably and securely on a soft cushion during bathing, and most are designed of materials that are slip-resistant. Infant bath pads, which resemble oversized pillows, can be placed in an adult tub or sink. The bath pad can be submerged in shallow water, which helps keep the baby warm while keeping his head safely above the water. They can also be used during a baby's first few weeks for sponge bathing. Bath pads are less bulky than traditional infant bathtubs, so they may be more practical for parents with smaller bathrooms.
The Leachco Safer Bather (*Est. $20) is mentioned on TheCradle.com as an excellent choice in infant bath pads, and reviewers on Amazon.com love this product, rating it with an average of 4.5 stars out of five based on nearly 550 consumer reviews. Reviewers rave about the safety and comfort offered by this product, noting that it can be used either in the tub or the sink. While a few parents mentioned that it developed a mildew smell after awhile, others note that mildew can avoided by hanging the bath pad up to dry after use or even placing it in the dryer. A few parents mention that they laundered the bath pad frequently and it held up quite well. Parents say the Leachco Safer Bather is especially useful for newborns and babies that aren't able to sit up on their own, because it's much easier for one parent to bathe a baby without having to try to hold the slippery baby still at the same time.
The Summer Infant Mother's Touch Comfort Bath Support (*Est. $15) is another product recommended on TheCradle.com. While there are few consumer reviews on Amazon.com, those that are available are mainly positive. This baby bath pad is very similar to the Leachco Safer Bather, but also features a stand to elevate one end of the pad. However, some parents say that while the stand prevents the pad from blocking the drain during use in the sink, it also restricts the number of ways it can be placed in some sinks. Like the Leachco Safer Bather, this product must be hung to dry after use to avoid mildew.
The Puj tub (*Est. $100) is a slightly different version of a baby bath pad. Robin Elise Weiss, About.com's guide to pregnancy and birth, rates this newer product with five out of five stars, although admitting she was skeptical at first. This pad is made of EVA foam -- the same stuff used as padding in running shoes. The pad comes flat; you then adjust the shape with snaps to fit in a bathroom sink. We didn't find too many reviews of this expensive product. On the blog SeriouslySpoiled.com, reviewer Joannie writes that the Puj tub is a good idea, but it works best for small babies. It won't work in a square sink, and it works best if your faucet is a swan-neck type.
