L.L.Bean Rolling Deluxe

pros
  • Large capacity
  • Contoured shoulder straps
cons
  • Weight
  • Sticky handle

Intended for ages 10 and up, the L.L.Bean Rolling Deluxe backpack gets better ratings than most wheeled backpacks for comfort, performance and durability. The 2,350-cubic-inch capacity is well organized, with two big main compartments plus an organizer pocket. A reflecting patch on the front adds safety. The tuck-away padded shoulder straps are contoured for extra comfort. At about 5.5 pounds, it's also fairly light for a rolling backpack but significantly heavier than a backpack without wheels. The fabric is tough, with abrasion-resistant ballistic nylon used for the pack's bottom. The Rolling Deluxe comes in 10 colors and can be personalized with an optional monogram or sports figure (*Est. $6). For a smaller but lighter pack without wheels, consider the JanSport SuperBreak (*Est. $30) or the JanSport Big Student (*Est. $40).

The best comparison tests of rolling backpacks are available from a 2001 issue of Consumer Reports, where includes tests and ratings for the L.L.Bean Rolling Deluxe. Owners also rate and review the Rolling Deluxe at LLBean.com.
