Expert tests find that Duracell CopperTop batteries work just as well as -- or even better than -- other disposable alkaline batteries, including pricier "advanced" or "ultra" batteries. But the CopperTop gets higher marks from owners, who say it's less likely to leak than cheaper generics. Duracell offers a no-leak warranty, too: If a Duracell battery leaks and ruins your device, the company will repair or replace it.
Since alkaline batteries hold their charge for a long time, it's wise to stock up when you find a good sale. Reviews say disposable alkaline batteries are the best value for low-drain electronics such as smoke detectors and TV remotes. For higher-drain devices such as digital cameras or game controllers, though, reviews recommend the pre-charged Sanyo Eneloop Rechargeable batteries (*Est. $12 for four AA) since they can be recharged up to 1,500 times.
Disposable alkalines get less attention in reviews than newer types, but the most recent review at ConsumerReports.org compares Duracell CopperTop batteries to 16 other sets of disposables. Which? magazine -- a U.K. publication similar to ConsumerReports.org -- tests the Duracell Plus, the British equivalent of the CopperTop. PopPhoto.com and students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute include the Duracell CopperTop in their battery tests. It also gets good overall reviews from more than 130 owners at Amazon.com.

The Energizer Advanced Lithium does pump out more power and last longer than the alkalines, but if you're shopping for alkaline batteries, "just buy whatever is on sale," the article concludes.
