Best supermarket BBQ sauce
- Good balance of sweetness and smoke
- Nice depth of flavor
- Inexpensive
- Thick, sticky consistency
- Contains artificial flavors
- Contains high-fructose corn syrup
March 2009. Reviewers say that KC Masterpiece is the best supermarket barbeque sauce that is widely available. This sauce is said to taste smoky and sweet, but only slightly spicy. This thick sauce coats meat well, but some reviews call it gloppy. If you're looking for a more complex barbeque sauce that doesn't contain high-fructose corn syrup, reviews point to Bone Suckin' Sauce (*est. $7 for 16 ounces), which contains only natural ingredients, including molasses and honey. However, Bone Suckin' Sauce is a lot harder to find and is much more expensive.
We read the best review of KC Masterpiece at Slate.com, where it went head-to-head with 11 other BBQ sauces. Cook's Country and Consumer Reports all cover KC Masterpiece. All of these publications taste sauces blind. We also read sauce recommendations from contributors to SeriousEats.com and Chowhound.com.
