Wearing a helmet that's too small is a headache -- literally. That's why the Bell XLV is a good choice for riders with large heads who find that other helmets fit too snugly for comfort. This is a feature-rich helmet in a big size but not a big price.
Great for extra-large heads. Many riders who say they've been measured as having large and extra-large heads find relief with this helmet. However, it's best for oval-shaped heads, reviewers say. One Amazon contributor adds he likes the versatility of the helmet and also uses it for trail riding.
At 353 grams it's not the lightest helmet on the market, but the 23 cooling air vents earn praise from Amazon users. The cooling airflow helps riders regulate their body temperature during long or strenuous rides in sunny weather. The helmet's body is constructed with in-mold technology, which fuses the shell to the foam liner and should increase durability.
Awkward components. The Bell XLV wins praise from most users on Amazon and Halfords. They say they are delighted to find a large helmet that sits well and doesn't bite into the head as much as an incorrectly fitting one. A few reviewers say they find it comfortable -- but this is the only helmet they've ever found big enough to wear. However, that's not to say that reviews are fully positive about the helmet's comfort. For example, some Amazon reviewers describe the chinstrap as awkward. Additionally, one user on Amazon attests the padding is insufficient and the helmet leaves red marks on his head after a ride. The fit system, which Bell calls the ErgoDial, receives mixed praise overall, but mostly positive comments from Halfords.com reviewers.
Durability issues. In their video review, XSportsProtective declares the Bell XLV "a great choice" for large-headed people needing to find a better fit. However, some of those people would prefer a more stylish helmet. While a Halfords.com contributor says the helmet is "stylish and practical," many reviewers on Amazon.com disagree but are so happy to have found a large-fitting helmet they don't mind the sacrifice. As for durability, there are some concerns. An Amazon reviewer claims the adjusting mechanism broke, causing his head to scrape the top of the helmet. Another is worried that the weak strap attachment will affect the durability of the helmet.
