Chain-type bike locks look aggressive and tough, but they can be vulnerable to bolt cutters. However, a chain bike lock is a good option for securing multiple bikes together, or as additional security when used in conjunction with a U-lock. The Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit chain lock holds up longer than others in tests, and it's far better than a cable lock. It comes with one year of theft protection up to $3,500, but the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Chain is heavy and bulky. If you only have one bike to secure, experts recommend the 5-pound New York Fahgettaboudit U-lock (*Est. $63) instead. It's more portable and easier to take with you while riding. If you are convinced that you want a chain lock and know you won't be carrying it around with you, many reviewers prefer the beefier OnGuard Beast 5016 Chain (*Est. $70) .

BikeRadar.com has a short review based on hands-on tests, but this review isn't very detailed. Slate.com's report is older but is more detailed and tests the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Chain's resistance to hand tools and compares it to that of competing bike locks. Bicycling magazine also has a detailed, but non-comparative, review.
