A cousin to the best-reviewed Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini (Est. $70), the slimmer New York Standard U-Lock allows a bit more space with a longer shackle without sacrificing the brand's top-of-the-line security and a considerable anti-theft protection plan.
Convenient design. The Kryptonite New York Standard U-Lock's thinner but slightly longer shackle allows more flexibility in where a bike can be secured, reviewers say. This lock can easily loop around both the bike frame and a wider anchor spot. Experts warn, however, that the extra length can also provide thieves with a bit more room to work.
The Standard U-Lock features an EZ-mounting bracket to make transport simple, but some owners find it flimsy and difficult to use.
Tough. Like most Kryptonite locks, the New York Standard U-Lock is praised by reviewers for its thick 16 mm shackle that's incredibly secure. A protective vinyl coating helps prevent nicks and scratches to the bike's frame. Users cite two drawbacks, however: The included EZ-mount bracket doesn't feel secure while riding and the LED key is of poor quality.
A robust but complicated protection plan. The Kryptonite New York Standard U-Lock features a $3,000 anti-theft protection plan, which isn't as high as some Kryptonite models but is on par with most locks. Reviewers say that to take advantage of the protection plan, consumers must initially submit a good deal of paperwork. And if the bike is stolen, the company requires the purchaser to send in pieces of the broken lock, which aren't always left behind.
