For consumers who want to secure a bike at one specific place, the OnGuard Beast is among the toughest chain locks available. However, the heavy weight makes it tough to transport.
Big chain, big protection. Although chain bike locks have waned in popularity compared to U-locks, they can be a perfect solution for those who need to lock a couple of bikes together or as extra security for a bicycle kept outside at home. No other chain lock is as well reviewed as the OnGuard Beast. It comes in different lengths from 3.5 feet to approximately 6 feet, with the option of three thicknesses.
The OnGuard Beast 8016, the shortest length available with the thickest links, tends to be the most popular of the line. (Note: On the OnGuard website, the lock is labeled Beast Chain with X4 Padlock.) As its name suggests, the lock is a 15-pound beast that's difficult to transport, making it better suited for those looking to anchor their bike in one spot. Those who need to take a lock with them on the road should consider a more rider-friendly U-lock.
Unique shape. The OnGuard Beast chain lock series is made of titanium-enforced hardened steel, which is considered the hardest bike lock material. Reviewers say its unique hexagonal link shape makes it hard for bolt cutters to grip, and a keyhole cover helps protect the inside lock mechanism from wind, rain and cold.
Anti-theft protection plan. The OnGuard Beast Chain Lock holds up beautifully in tests and is much stronger than any cable lock. OnGuard offers $5,001 of anti-theft protection, and the Beast's ability to wrap around and through things is an outstanding form of security. In a 2009 Men's Journal test, this is the only lock that resists all test attacks, including a power tool.
