Blenders to Quench a Summer Thirst
by Editors of Consumer Reports
Our Assessment

For this report, Consumer Reports' team of testers spent hours crushing ice, preparing frozen drinks, blending smoothies and pureeing vegetables in 31 blenders. Editors conclude that more money doesn't necessarily buy you a better blender. In addition to blender ratings, there's a sidebar article here on multifunction and stick blenders. While blender reviews at Cook's Illustrated are more in-depth and detailed, no other reviewer tests as many models as Consumer Reports.

Sizing Up Souped-Up Blenders
by Editors of Cook's Illustrated
Our Assessment Cook's Illustrated puts nine blenders to the test in this review, tackling a variety of kitchen tasks that range from cracking ice for smoothies to blending chickpeas for hummus. This review is more in-depth and detailed than the ratings chart at Consumer Reports.

Inexpensive Blenders
by Editors of Cook's Illustrated
Our Assessment Cook's Illustrated testers prepared broccoli soup, ice-filled smoothies and pesto in nine blenders priced at less than $50. While testing here is objective and thorough, this report is outdated, and some of the tested blenders have since been discontinued.

Blenders Enter the Ice Age
by Charles Passy
Our Assessment

In this article, Charles Passy covers five blenders with special ice-crushing features, testing their ability to make frozen drinks. The KitchenAid Five-Speed Custom Blender is rated best overall, with power, practicality (an easy-pour and shatterproof polycarbonate jar) and style (including several color options). The Cuisinart Bar Blender CBT-500 is named the best value, but the wide-mouth glass jar made pouring a challenge.

Blenders
by Contributors to Amazon.com
Our Assessment

Amazon.com is an excellent source for owner-written ratings of blenders. Since many blenders get hundreds of reviews, Amazon.com can even be a better, more updated source than Consumer Reports in some cases. This is where we've catalogued the most ongoing problems with the Braun PowerMax MX2050 blender, whose plastic teeth frequently break, according to reports. Owners appreciate the Oster 2-Speed Beehive Chrome Blender's ice-crushing ability and retro styling, though several report that the motor is loud.

Blending In
by Sam Gugino
Our Assessment For this article, Sam Gugino tests five blenders priced $130 and up by grating cheese, pureeing soup and making margaritas. The easy favorite, the Vita-Mix Professional, is also the most expensive by far. The KitchenAid KSB5 is the runner-up. The Viking Professional VBLG is the loser of the group; it was the least powerful and its smaller jug couldn't puree a whole batch of soup.

The Best Blenders
by Editors of Good Housekeeping
Our Assessment

Good Housekeeping's editors test 16 blenders and provide brief reviews of the four top performers. However, they don't detail their testing procedures or reveal which blenders did not make the cut. The Braun Power Max MX2050 is a no-frills blender, but it performed the best in testing, is relatively quiet and has the largest capacity of the top four. The Cuisinart Smart Power 7-Speed Electronic Blender, The Oster 10-Speed blender and the Hamilton Beach Wave Station Plus are the other picks. We'd rate this review more highly if editors revealed how they tested, as well as which blenders didn't make the cut (and why).

High-Speed Blender Triathlon: Abusive Lab Test
by Tyghe Trimble
Our Assessment

Popular Mechanics takes three blenders, the Cuisinart SmartPower Premier, the Breville ikon BBL600XL and the Black & Decker Home 10-Speed, and subjects them to several punishing tests: make a frozen margarita in ten seconds, shave ice and power through whole bananas, oranges and apples. They conclude that the Breville "came closest to the real thing" with frozen margaritas, shaved ice in "Ice Crush" mode and chewed through the whole fruits. No other blender features are considered.

Jug Blenders
by Editors of Which? magazine
Our Assessment

Editors of the U.K.-based Which? magazine test 19 blenders for quality and durability. They prepare mayonnaise, purees, shakes and smoothies in each blender. Most of the blenders here are not available in the United States, but the KitchenAid Ultra Power 5-Speed blender is rated a best buy. Editors say the KitchenAid's soft-start and pulse features make a "curious combination, as you have to select the function you want to pulse on," but they also say that the Ultra Power is easy to use and does an excellent job at all liquefying tasks.

The Best Blenders
by Jennifer Jafarzadeh
Our Assessment

Real Simple tests 25 blenders and rates three of them "good," "better" and "best." They also list features to look for in a blender: glass pitcher, weighted base and more, and briefly discuss immersion blenders. Unfortunately, editors don't identify any of the losing blenders, and testing details for the top three -- the Viking Professional, the Westinghouse Intelliblend and the Cuisinart SmartPower Basics -- are sparse.

Blenders: Work Top
by Contributors to Epinions
Our Assessment Epinions is another good place for reading owner-written reviews of blenders. Most blenders here receive mixed reviews. Two Waring models (the 7011S and 700G) receive the highest ratings, but aren't common models - they are commercial blenders. There are many models here and only a handful of owner-written reviews for each of them, so ratings should be considered with that in mind.

A Crush of Powerful Blenders
by Stephanie D. Smith
Our Assessment This short article highlights three models, but testing details are few, and Stephanie Smith doesn't reveal how many models she tested. The Oster Contemporary Classic Beehive Blender is her budget pick. The KitchenAid KSB5 is rated more highly and the Cuisinart CBT-500 is rated at the top of this review.

Not Dated
Blender Reviews
by Colleen Graham
Our Assessment

There are blender reviews scattered across at least three areas on the About.com website, but the two reviews here are the only write-ups in which it appears the blenders were actually tested. Colleen Graham tests the Waring Pro Bar Blender in the context of making drinks. For that purpose, she says it's a champ, but with only two speed options, it isn't really appropriate for general use. The TailGator blender, which runs on a gas engine, is also a lot of fun. (Note that About.com and ConsumerSearch are owned by the same parent company, but are not editorially affiliated.)

Review: Blendtec Total Blender – Whippin' It Good
by Danny Dumas
Our Assessment A short review tests the Blendtec Total Blender and judges "wired" (good) and "tired" (bad) features. Wired editors found it "absurdly powerful," but "expensive" and also "willfully ugly."
Test Kitchen Essential Tool, Part 3
by Grace Parisi
Our Assessment

This short blog post talks about the Blendtec blender, which is the editors' choice for use in their test kitchen, after having gone through a dozen Hamilton Beach blenders due to the rigors of testing recipes. Parisi notes that their goal in the test kitchen is to use "residential" equipment, not industrial, with the exception of the Blendtec. She also notes that Blendtec now has a line of residential blenders.

Shake Things Up
by Matt Bean
Our Assessment A short blurb simply says that the editors' favorite blender is the Breville BBL600XL, because of its unique blade system that leaves no ice chunks and blends thoroughly. Men's Health occasionally publishes information on blenders because many of its readers drink protein shakes and smoothies.

Blender
by Contributors to ExpoTV.com
Our Assessment

ExpoTV is a consumer-review site where owners post video reviews instead of text. A query on "blender" turned up a handful of owner-posted reviews for several different models. Seeing the blender in action can be especially helpful as far as performance; for example, one owner gives a demonstration of the KitchenAid 5-Speed Blender's ice-crushing ability. Several owners post positive video reviews of their Osterizer blenders as well.

Blender Reviews
by Contributors to Buzzillions.com
Our Assessment

Similar to other consumer-review sites, Buzzillions allows owners to submit reviews of products they own. A nice feature is the ability to filter the reviews by top-rated, pros, price, best uses, etc. For blenders, there are only a handful of reviews for several models, and immersion blenders and specialty machines like "margarita makers" are mixed in with full-sized blenders. As of this writing, the Breville ikon, Waring Professional and KitchenAid 5-Speed blenders were among the top-rated choices by users.

Blenders
by Editors of Consumer Guide
Our Assessment Consumer Guide's recent reviews offer detailed descriptions of features. Editors seem to have tried the blenders, and they offer some comments and even criticisms of how they function. However, 20 of the 32 blenders are named a "Best Buy," and the reviews are almost entirely positive.
