Can you trust online reviews?

The issue of fake user reviews is nothing new. We blogged about it back in 2009 after a Wall Street Journal article exposed the practice by certain companies of having employees post favorable write ups to user-review sites, such as Amazon.com. Now, The New York Times has shed some light on something new, yet still the same: offering real customers financial incentives to write positive reviews -- in this case getting their product for free. Does this latest black eye for user-written reviews mean that it's time to start ignoring them? Follow us after the jump for our take. Read more

Where to mount a plasma or LCD TV

So you've picked out the perfect flat-screen LCD TV or plasma TV. You've even picked out the perfect TV wall mount to hang it on a wall. But have you picked out the perfect place to put your new TV? Experts -- ourselves included -- often wax poetically about the outstanding picture quality of top-performing TVs. However, the truth of the matter is that no matter how perfect the image, factors such as seating distances, TV height and more can conspire to ruin the viewing experience. Here's what you need to know. Read more

The neatest "Thing" at CES

At Consumer Electronics Show, it's hard to miss Sony, LG, Panasonic, etc. But sometimes -- actually, make that most time -- the thing that makes you stop and say "whoa, that's just cool" can be found in the smallest booths tucked away in the farthest reaches of the show's most remote exhibition hall. At this year's CES, one product that delivered that cool factor for me was the MakerBot Replicator 3D printer. Read more

Wii U makes a cameo appearance at CES

While Nintendo did not have a presence on the show floor at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, a team of company representatives held court in the adjoining The LVH Hotel showing off the much anticipated Nintendo Wii U to invited guests, including yours truly. Though I'm certainly no hardcore gamer -- not with my fist full of thumbs -- the chance to see what all of the hubbub is about was far too good to pass up. So, did the Wii U live up to the hype? Yeah, pretty much, though there are still plenty of question marks. Read more

Press Day at CES: Lot's of hype, but more than a little promise, too

Press Day at CES can seem a little surreal at times. After all, it's when some of the biggest names in consumer electronics do their darndest to convince the media that their new mousetrap is the best ever invented -- even if they said the same thing about last year's mousetrap (and never mind how that turned out). Lots of smoke and mirrors, and song and dance -- not to mention some big name celebrity endorsers such as Justin Timberlake, Kelly Clarkson and Will Smith. Oh, yeah, there was some pretty neat technology on display as well, especially in the realm of home entertainment. Here is some of what piqued my interest. Read more

LG's 55-inch OLED TV debuts at CES

Insanely beautiful, and almost certainly insanely priced, LG's anticipated 55-inch OLED TV was officially unveiled at the company's press event this morning at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. We'll have the opportunity to take a closer look at it in the coming days, but for now, and at first glance, the TV seems to be every bit the masterwork that was expected, with some, such as CNET, saying that it could be "the best TV ever." What's in store for CES 2012?

With the Christmas holiday now in our rear-view mirror, and the new year nearly upon us, it is time to focus on the next big event on the calendar: the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which officially kicks off on Jan. 10. That's when somewhere in the neighborhood of 150,000 attendees will descend on Las Vegas to see the latest and the greatest -- and, yes, plenty of the not-so-great as well -- in electronics for the home and on the go. Though much of what's to be unveiled remains a closely guarded secret, some rumors and official announcements have snuck out. Here's just a taste of what to expect. Read more

More TV bargains and bundles for Black Friday

Earlier this month, we blogged about some TV deals that caught our eye in the first wave of leaked Black Friday circulars. Now that the bulk of the circulars -- and the last-minute surprise add-ons to those circulars -- have made the scene, the full picture on TV deals for Black Friday and Black Friday eve has come into focus. Since the shopping holiday is more about value and bottom-line pricing, it's really no surprise that discounts on top performing sets are modest at best. However if good-enough performance is good enough in exchange for a hard-to-beat price, there are some buys to be had. Check out our earlier post for some pretty good deals. In addition, here are a couple of others to consider. Read more

Sub $50 Blu-ray Disc players arrive for Black Friday

They're here. We've been waiting for Blu-ray players to crack the $50 barrier for a while now, and the first round of Black Friday circulars reveals that the wait is over. We know of at least two offers, and there's the possibility of more once all is said and done. While you can still save a tiny bit by opting for a DVD player, at this price point, a Blu-ray player makes far more sense for anyone with an HDTV, or that thinks they might get an HDTV in the next year or two. Don't forget, in addition to delivering pristine (or at least near-pristine) video quality with high-def Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray players are completely compatible with DVDs, and usually do as good a job -- or better -- than most DVD players when it comes to taking those discs and scaling their standard-def images for display on an HDTV. But are these bargain Black Friday Blu-ray players really a bargain? Let's find out Read more

TV bargains to be found on Black Friday

When it comes to technology "buys" for Black Friday, the dam is breaking a little early this holiday season. (Wasn't Halloween just yesterday?) In any event, the last few days has seen the highly-anticipated circulars from Best Buy and Walmart find their way on line -- and unlike previous years, when what's appeared this early has been unofficial, these look to be the real deal. We'll be picking apart the offerings over the next little bit to find the best deals for those willing to go stand in line before going to bed as both stores are putting their electronics on sale at midnight (and Walmart is opening its doors at 10 p.m. Thanksgiving night). Let's start out with a look at the best TV deals we've spotted -- at least so far. Read more
