Tips for protecting your privacy online

According to the latest surveys, American's are now spending just as many hours on line as in front of their TVs. With that increased time surfing, emailing, and interacting on social networks comes a not-so-hidden danger: the loss of personal privacy. Some of that comes in the form of attacks from blatant criminals -- those who use phishing and other schemes to convince unsuspecting people to divulge important personal and financial information. But far more comes as a key part of how the Internet pays for itself -- using your browsing habits to help businesses target you with advertising and other information with greater accuracy and efficiency, whether you want them to or not. Radio days are back again

Given the variety of modern audio gear to choose from, whether you favor tiny mp3 players or hefty home-theater receivers, table radios might seem to be an afterthought, if not an anachronism. But new features like iPod docks along with surprisingly high-quality sound have given table radios a new lease on life, and make them a great gift this holiday season or anytime else. Here's an idea: Instead ask what type of smartphone he or she owns. According to a study by the folks at Retrevo.com, the type of smartphone a person owns sheds some interesting light on their personality and what type of gifts would thrill them most this holiday season. Survey names top tech winners and losers for 2010

Windows 7, the Apple iPad, streaming movies and the Kindle e-reader are just some of the technologies that enjoyed a terrific 2010, or so say the editors at Retrevo.com, who have put together a list of the five technology winners and five technology losers of year based on a study of more than 1,000 consumers. On the down side, 2010 hasn't been a rousing success for 3DTV. It's joined by GPS devices, MP3 players, netbooks and Android tablets on the site's list of this year's technology losers. Read more

Netflix offers streaming only plan: Is it time to ditch the disc?

Netflix, which pioneered the online disc rental concept, has announced its first streaming-only subscription plan. Long anticipated, especially after the company launched a similar plan in Canada earlier this fall, it's priced at $7.99 per  month. That, not coincidentally we are sure, is the same as the recently lowered price of the Hulu Plus streaming service. Those who were clamoring for a less-expensive streaming-only Netflix plan are likely pleased. On the other hand, those who still want physical media (DVDs or Blu-ray Discs), or would like to see an occasional new release or two, are probably wearing a frown after learning that they'll need to dig deeper into their pockets each month as the cost of Netflix's traditional plans are going up. Cheap netbook and notebook deals and duds for Black Friday

Those looking for deals on cheap netbooks have a few things to be merry about on Black Friday. If you don't mind lugging around something that's a little bulkier, though not necessarily all that much more powerful, we also spied a pretty nice deal on a super cheap full-sized laptop. But beware, among the goodies there are some of lumps of coal that are more likely to leave their recipients frowning rather than smiling. Here's what to look for, and what to avoid. Read more

What's the story on e-readers for Black Friday?

Ebook readers are dead, the pundits cried after the debut of the iPad last summer. Not so fast, the public replied, as e-reader makers cut prices to deal with the reality of the post-iPad world. Fast-forward to today, and e-readers are expected to be a popular holiday gift for 2010. Because of that, it's no surprise the e-readers are also the subject of lots of Black Friday offers. Some of the deals are sure to be best sellers; others belong on the clearance table. Read on to see which is which. Read more

Blu-ray player deals for Black Friday -- and for right now

As we've noted in our report on Blu-ray players, improving technology and dropping prices have made Blu-ray Disc players a reasonable choice over a DVD player for anyone that owns an HDTV. If you're considering making the move to Blu-ray this holiday season, we spotted a number of good offers on everything from basic, low-priced Blu-ray Disc spinners to feature-rich players with all the trimmings, including 3D, built-in Wi-Fi and Internet streaming support. You might need to line up pretty early for some of these deals, while you can get others right now. Here's our take on the best deals if you want to make this a Blu Christmas. Read more

Where to find the best HDTV deals on Black Friday

With Black Friday circulars from most of the major retailers now leaked and posted online at sites like BFads.net, it's time to step back and see what's in store for shoppers hoping to put a new HDTV under the tree for the holidays. Looking through the ads, we were struck with a sense of déjà vu all over again (with apologies to Yogi Berra) as we saw many identical sets at retailers such as Walmart, Best Buy, and Sears being offered at nearly identical prices. At the same time, we saw a handful of deals just good enough to lose a little sleep over. As you might expect, the sets with the best performance and best features are only seeing modest reductions, if any at all. On the other hand, you can save a stack of greenbacks if you're willing to accept a TV from a lesser-known maker and put a greater premium on value than on getting the absolute best picture quality. Here's what we found. Read more

Blu-ray at Best Buy: Good and better Black Friday buys

This is beginning to look like a merry holiday season for anyone looking to step up from DVD to Blu-ray Disc. While the Holy Grail of a $50 Blu-ray player is still proving to be elusive, we're coming tantalizingly close, and I would not be surprised to see one surface for Black Friday before all's said and done. In the meantime, the Best Buy Black Friday circular has been leaked -- you can see it at BFads.net and elsewhere -- and it includes three tempting offers for value-oriented Blu-ray players. We have our preferences, but depending on yours, all are worth considering. Read more
