Innovative (or wacky?) Bluetooth headsets

Design and technology in Bluetooth headsets are evolving at an interesting pace. On one side are the headsets that preserve the "retro-marketer" look and on the other end of the spectrum are those that can qualify as costume jewelry. We've come across headsets with motion sensors that can respond to shakes and taps. There's a whole line of headsets with military-grade noise cancellation, and others designed to be discreet and super-comfortable, even after hours of wear. We also stumbled upon some quirky, yet somewhat practical features, from a hibernation mode to extend battery life for months to a dog-tag design for a rugged outdoors look. All the Bluetooth headsets in this slideshow offer something a little different.  Read more

The Cloud: a solution to the problem of having too much music?

Purchasing music online and downloading it digitally to computers, MP3 players and phones has certainly changed the way we discover and listen to music, not least of which is releasing us from the need to own physical CDs. However, this freedom has come with its own, new, set of problems. The almost overwhelming selection of music, literally tens of millions of songs, available at low prices means that some of us now own too much music: too much to organize and too much to store, maybe even too much to listen to. If you add in the further complication of making sure that the music we want to hear is on the device that we want to use at the time that we want to listen to it, owning digital music seems like a lot of work. Using Wi-Fi for more than web surfing

If you surf the web, chances are you have or are thinking of getting a wireless (Wi-Fi) router. (See our just updated report on wireless routers to help you make your purchase decision.) In the home and office, Wi-Fi routers are great if you want to connect several devices to the Internet at once, and share data and printers among them. Here's a look at what wireless routers can do. Read more

Laser printers by the numbers (and letters)

As we were updating our reports on monochrome and color laser printers, we were reminded that printer specifications are full of numbers, from the model identification itself to the much-advertised cost per page. To decide which printer is right for you, it's helpful to know what's behind the most frequently-cited numbers.  Read more

Laser printers: What's the real cost per page?

When buying a printer, you have to think about ongoing costs of printing in addition to the price of the printer itself. Manufacturers offer cost per page estimates, and some of the reviews that we researched as we updated our monochrome laser printer report work out real life estimates. However, calculating the cost is not as straightforward as simply dividing the cost of the toner cartridge by the number of pages the manufacturer says it can print . To obtain an accurate running cost, you need to think first about what you'll be printing. Read more

Geocaching: A high-tech treasure hunt

If you're intrigued by the thought of hidden treasure and by old maps with an X marking the "spot" then geocaching just could be the game for you. Bringing treasure hunting into the modern day through the use of GPS technology and handheld GPS receivers, geocaching is an outdoor game, and even a competitive sport, in which people navigate to a set of coordinates and then look for the container, the geocache, hidden at that location. The thrill of the hunt is in finding the geocache and discovering its contents -- be it just a logbook where you can record your accomplishment for posterity or a small trinket or knick-knack that you can take with you as the spoils of victory. Webcams: Not just for video chats anymore

The latest webcams allow us to record events in our lives in full high-definition video and to upload our creations to social media sites to share with the online world. Photo resolutions of 8 to 10 megapixels and built-in stereo microphones enhance these multi-media experiences, and software allows us to distort, adjust and play with the video and photo images. With webcam features now standard on laptops, notebooks and tablets, sending your message to the world has never been easier. But some people have taken the webcam beyond its usual uses of video chatting and video recording. Here's a look at four out-of-the-box uses for webcamsRead more

Bluetooth headsets: the new etiquette

You've seen them - or more likely heard them - shouting on their cell phones or seemingly talking to themselves. As with any technology, etiquette rules for cellphones and Bluetooth headsets have sprung up - and are constantly broken. You don't want to be one of those people, do you? Well, the latest Bluetooth headsets enable you to successfully ignore etiquette, and look cool while you break the rules. Read more
