ConsumerSearch at CES: First day video highlights

This week, ConsumerSearch editors Carl Laron and Molly McLaughlin are attending the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. They're checking out all the hot new gizmos and gadgets, tweeting about their discoveries and sharing pictures and video from the convention floor.

We've cut together a 60-second video of some of the sights from CES, which you can watch below or on our YouTube channel. Among Carl's favorite finds from the first day of the convention are the MakerBot Replicator 2, a desktop 3D printer; the Winbot, a window-cleaning robot from Ecovacs Robotics; a 32-inch Windows 8 touchscreen made by ViewSonic; and the Solowheel, a gyro-stabilized electric unicycle.

Carl and Molly will be sending more video clips over the coming days, and we'll share the highights with you. Enjoy! Read more

Tips for choosing an artificial Christmas tree

Christmas is just a few weeks away and unfortunately, there are so many artificial trees on the market that it's impossible to find any sort of reviewer consensus on what the best artificial Christmas tree may be. However, there's plenty of information out there to make buying an artificial tree easier, and we've compiled several tips on what to look for.

Lensbaby Spark: We Tried it!

Lensbaby has developed a cult-like following for their line of special-effects SLR camera lenses, which allow shooters create gauzy, selective-focus images. It's pretty cool (and pretty gimmicky). Being the camera geek I am, I've considered buying one several times, but the price (ranging from $150 to $400) has always held me back. It just seemed like a lot of money for such a specialized lens.

But recently, the Portland, Ore.-based company introduced a new, entry-level lens, the Lensbaby Spark (Est. $80). I dashed off an email to the company, and a few days later a Spark showed up at the ConsumerSearch office, ready to be tested. To see how the Lensbaby works, watch our video review at the end of this post, and read on for some additional impressions.

Logitech K310 Washable Keyboard: We tried it!

Computer keyboards get no love.

We bang on them day in, day out. We paw them with grubby hands, eat and drink over them like they were place mats, and try not to think about how dirty they get. Maybe, if we're neat freaks, we'll clean them. But keyboards never seem to get really, truly clean -- too many nooks, crannies and crevices -- and much as we may want to, we can't (well, shouldn't) put them in the dishwasher or dunk them in the sink to give them a good scrubbing.

Until now.

A few weeks ago, we asked Logitech to send us one of their new K310 Washable Keyboard (*Est. $40). Logitech touts this peripheral as "the keyboard that loves a wash." But does the Logitech K310 keyboard really work? We decided to put one to the test and recorded the results on video, which you can watch here or on our YouTube channel. We'll have a full review of the Logitech K310 when we update our report on computer keyboards in the coming months, but in the meantime, watch and enjoy! Read more

GoJo Hands Free Review: We tried it!

If you own a cell phone and want a hands-free means of using it, you could buy a Bluetooth headset and be done with it. But if you're cheap -- or you love As Seen On TV products -- there's another option: the GoJo Hands Free cell phone headset. The commercials tout it as a "true hands-free" way to use your cell phone. Any phone.

But does it really work? Read more

Best sunscreens: Watch us put three Best Reviewed picks to the test

Experts say a good SPF sunscreen should protect users from both UVA and UVB rays. The best formulas should contain broad-spectrum chemical or physical sunscreens or a combination of the two. All five our Best Reviewed sunscreens meet this standard.

But like a lot of personal-care products, choosing the best sunscreen comes down to a matter of personal preference. Important factors to consider include how easy it is to apply, how it smells and feels on your skin, and what the ingredients are. We asked some of our co-workers to sample three of our Best Reviewed sunscreens -- Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock, Badger Lightly Scented Sunscreen and Blue Lizard Sunscreen Sensitive -- and give us their feedback.

You can see the results on our YouTube channel or in the video embedded below. Read more

Micro Chip Crisp'r: Watch us try it!

A couple weeks ago, we posted photos of a mystery gadget on our Facebook page, asking readers for their guesses as to what it was. "It" turned out to be a Micro Chip Crisp'r (*Est. $6), a plastic gadget to make your own potato chips in the microwave.

We got plenty of oddball replies. Many people thought it had something to do with bundt cakes; a couple readers thought it was a U.F.O., while a few others suggested devices that we can't discuss on a family-oriented website like ConsumerSearch.

Strangely, almost no one asked if the darn thing even worked. So we decided to put it to the test. Read more

Our reports can be resources even if the product you seek isn't reviewed

We frequently receive emails from readers who want to know why a particular product isn't reviewed on our site. Although ConsumerSearch covers more than 400 product categories, we can't review every single make and model available (though we wish we could!).

But even if you can't find a specific item on our site, chances are there is a report that touches on the product category you're interested in. All of our reports offer shopping tips and links to additional research resources -- not to mention details on products that earn positive reviews from experts and owners alike.

Read on for a selection of recent reader emails.
