Going away to college? Brush up on your laundry skills

Ah, college... Term papers. Keg parties. Laundry. What do these three things have in common? If you don't know what you're doing, you're going to be in for a world of hurt. Granted, you won't fail your class and you won't wake up with hangover. But throw that red T-shirt in with a load of tighty whities and you may be wearing pink underwear for the rest of the semester.

Fear not, young freshman. Learning how to do your own laundry is much easier than writing 50-page report and nowhere near as painful as a hangover. We scoured the web for some great laundry tips that will earn you an A in Laundry 101.

Finding a truly green all-purpose cleaner isn't easy

Choosing a green all-purpose cleaner has never been easier -- or harder. On one hand, even mainstream manufacturers have hopped on the green bandwagon, meaning more choices for consumers. On the other hand, more doesn't necessarily mean better. If anything, the explosion of all-purpose cleaners claiming to be eco-friendly means it's just that much harder to cut through the clutter and choose the best green all-purpose cleaner.

A veggie burger that tastes good? Holy cow!

When you think about it, veggie burgers are an oxymoron of the food world. After all, if you're vegetarian or vegan, why would you want to eat something that was engineered to resemble meat? Admittedly, that's a rather facile argument. Plenty of meat eaters -- yours truly included -- have been known to chow down on a veggie burger or two, and not because it's meat-free. Some of us actually LIKE the taste of veggie burgers, many of which don't even try to emulate meat.

That doesn't mean all veggie burgers are created equal. Far from it. As we found during our research, the best veggie burgers combine tasty ingredients with a texture that — if not meatlike — at the very least doesn't turn to mush when you cook it. Read on for more on what critics have to say about choosing the best veggie burger.

Three beard trimmers worth a closer look

Ask a guy with a beard why he has one, and he may say that it's because he hates to shave. But as most fuzzy-faced fellows will tell you, maintaining a beard takes effort -- sometimes more than shaving, depending on how creative you get with your facial hair. Whether you go for five o'clock shadow, a neat goatee or full fur, choosing the right beard trimmer will ensure you stay handsomely hirsute.

TV antenna face-off: Terk HDTVa vs. Clearstream Micron

Every so often, we come across a product that catches our eye, usually something new to market that has the potential to be a contender for Best Reviewed status. Recently, we tested the Clearstream Micron (*Est. $45) indoor TV antenna, made by Antennas Direct. Can it meet or beat the performance of the Terk HDTVa antenna (*Est. $35), which we named the best TV antenna, or it is another also-ran in the field of TV antennas for receiving over-the-air HDTV broadcast signals? All abubble over choosing the best seltzer maker

When it comes to drinking carbonated water (aka seltzer), no one can outguzzle the Germans. They consume about 3 billion liters of the stuff every year, or 37 liters per person, according to TheNibble.com. The U.S. ranks a distant second, downing about a half-billion gallons of carbonated water annually, or 0.6 liters per capita.

That may not seem like much, but those of us who love seltzer consume much, much more than our per-capita share -- and costs can add up quickly. One solution is to consider buying a soda maker and making your own seltzer or soda. Soda maker reviews are few in number, and we found only a few multiproduct comparisons, but one manufacturer emerges as the clear reviewer favorite.

Chinese Colgate toothpaste: rumor or reality?

Recently, a concerned reader contacted us to ask whether Colgate toothpaste is made in China, something he'd read about online. This isn't surprising -- just type "Colgate toothpaste made in China" into Google. But it's a rumor, not fact. As is the case with so many Internet rumors, however, the confusion is somewhat understandable.
