Assemble products at home? Not so fast...

Along with envelope stuffing, assembly jobs are a common work-at-home scheme, promising big bucks for jobs that require no experience. The Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau both caution that the majority of these offers are scams designed to take your cash, usually in the form of a "small fee" for a list of companies allegedly hiring for piecemeal assembly work, without any promise of obtaining (much less being paid for) legitimate work.

Fresh it ain't, but some frozen pizzas are still darn tasty

Frozen pizza is big business in the U.S. How big? Kraft Foods -- the biggest seller of frozen pizzas in the U.S. and maker of the top two frozen pizza brands, DiGiorno and Tombstone -- sold more than $1.2 billion worth of frozen pizzas in 2009. When you add up the sales for the top 10 vendors (including private store labels), Americans spent nearly $3 billion on frozen pizza last year.

That's a lot of frozen pies, and not all of them are created equal. Among the many frozen pizza reviews we read -- and there are plenty of them -- none could be said to be as good as freshly-made pizza but a few brands do earn consistent praise from critics. Whether you prefer cheese, pepperoni or more exotic toppings, there's a frozen pizza for you. To learn more about choosing the best frozen pizza, read on.

Get the scoop on the best vanilla ice cream

We haven't revisited the topic of ice cream in more than two years, so we decided that it was high time we took another look at this sweet subject. Specifically, we wanted to see if Haagen-Dazs Vanilla was still the best vanilla ice cream, or if another brand had emerged as a challenger. We were also curious to know whether Breyers Double Churn Light Creamy Vanilla still is considered the best light ice cream.

Tips for choosing the best garden hose

A good garden hose is an essential tool for homeowners and gardeners who have lawns and plants that need regular watering. Unlike lawn mowers or string trimmers, however, there aren't many professional garden hose reviews, making it difficult to single out a single brand as the best. Pancake syrup or maple syrup? Choosing just one's a sticky business

Last week, we recommended a couple of pancake mixes. But pancakes by themselves are pretty boring -- and dry -- without syrup, so this week we're taking a look at choosing the best pancake syrup. Much like pancake mix, there are countless brands of syrup that you can drizzle over your hotcakes. We take a look at what some experts and foodies have to say about maple syrup and pancake syrup and how well various brands stack up.

Finding a pancake mix you'll flip for

It's the weekend once again, and for many people, it's an opportunity to enjoy a big breakfast with the family. And that means pancakes. Big brands may dominate store shelves, but there are plenty of specialty pancake mixes, too. Although a single pancake mix doesn't emerge as the hands-down favorite, a few brands do earn consistent praise from reviewers.

Take some time to choose the best kitchen timer

Kitchen timers may not seem like a necessity, but these gadgets can be handy when you're cooking multiple dishes or your range's timer is broken. And unlike the timer on your oven or microwave, cooking timers are portable -- you may not hear your oven's timer if you're in another room. When it comes to choosing the best kitchen timer, however, we found an total lack of consensus. Most professional cooking timer reviews focus on form, rather than function, and the majority of reviewers are more interested in cutesy designs than whether the timer actually works well. Rather than choose a single best product, we're offering some tips to make picking a kitchen timer easy.

The best matzah? Depends on what your mom served

Passover begins at sundown on Monday with the seder, a ritual meal that celebrates the start of this week-long Jewish holiday. Among the staples of the seder is matzah, a cracker-like, unleavened bread that commemorates the bread that the Jews took with them as they fled ancient Egypt.

As we discovered, choosing the best matzah is largely a matter of personal preference. Rather than a single brand coming out on top, a few emerge as the most preferred in the taste tests that we found.

Taking the slow bus to Boston: Wi-Fi on wheels

I'm writing this from somewhere in the middle of Connecticut, on my way from New York City to Boston. I'm taking the BoltBus, a bus line in the Northeast that runs between Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. One of their big selling points is free Wi-Fi on board, and since the trip is over five hours long, I figured I'd bring my laptop along and get some work done, maybe do some reading, chat online or even stream a movie to pass the time.

Unfortunately, as I discovered, the mobile Wi-Fi leaves something to be desired. Namely, it's slow as heck.

Choosing the best ketchup -- and so much more

Last month, we looked at choosing the best mustard. This month, we're examining another popular condiment: ketchup. Ketchup -- or catsup, if you prefer -- is not only one of America's favorite condiments, it's also a product category dominated by just a handful of brands: Heinz, Hunt's and Del Monte. Yet when it comes to choosing the best ketchup, the most popular brand (Heinz) isn't necessarily the most highly rated.
