In the realm of point-and-shoot digital cameras, the Canon PowerShot SD-Series edges out the competition. In particular, the PowerShot SD990 IS has the best blend of image quality, features and price, with lots of manual controls.
Photographers looking for more advanced models, but not digital SLRs, will find compelling models from lesser-known brands such as Ricoh and Casio, the latter of which makes the first high-speed compact camera, the Exilim EX-FC100. Fuji also has a standout model, the FinePix F200EXR (pictured at left), which excels in low light conditions.
