Working out at home

If you resolved to lose weight in the New Year but you're leery of committing to a long-term gym membership, you can establish a home workout routine instead.

Exercise DVDs are a convenient and affordable way to get fit, as long as you actually put them to use. With such a wide range of them on the market, how can pick the one that's best for you? Fortunately, you can preview workout DVDs at retail websites like Amazon.com and CollageVideo.com prior to purchase.
More exercises let you better customize your routine

It's important to include cardio, strength training and stretching in every workout, so the easiest solution is to find a video that incorporates all three elements. Fitness Magazine recommends Minna Lessig's Total Body Toning: 1 Minute Workout as the best boredom-busting routine for total-body results. Lessig's DVD has over 115 different exercises to choose from, allowing you to customize your workout based on your time, energy level and target areas.

Keep your skill level in mind

In our last report on exercise videos, ConsumerSearch named Billy Blanks Tae Bo Amped one of the Best Reviewed cardio videos overall. Intended for intermediate and advanced users, this five-DVD set provides a good cardio workout and incorporates some strength training. If you're a beginner, or you're simply looking for a less strenuous routine, Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds series combines walking with simple, low-impact exercises.

Diversify your workout with Pilates or yoga

If you want to include Pilates or yoga in your workout routine, ConsumerSearch found that Kathy Smith Timesaver: Lift Weights to Lose Weight is a favorite among users on Amazon.com, Epinions.com and CollageVideo.com. This workout focuses on strength training through the use of dumbbells (which must be purchased separately), and adds elements of yoga and Pilates for diversity.

ConsumerSearch recommends Alan Finger's Yoga Zone: Introduction to Yoga as an excellent toning and stretching tool for beginners. It's also the About.com guide to Hinduism's top pick among yoga videos. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)
