In cooperation with the Consumer Products Safety Commission, Dorel Juvenile Group -- which manufactures infant cars seats under Cosco, Safety 1st, Disney and Eddie Bauer labels, has recalled almost half a million models. According to the CPSC, the carrying handle can break. So far, the agency has received 77 reports of breaking handles, three of which resulted in injuries to the baby. None of the affected car seats are top-rated in our report on infant car seats.
The affected car seats were manufactured between January 6, 2008 through April 6, 2009, and include the Safety 1st Sojourn, Vector, Eurostar and Lite Wave travel systems; the Cosco Sprint travel system, the Disney Propack travel system as well as Eddie Bauer Adventurer and Endeavor travel systems. Not that the stroller portion of the travel systems are not affected.
The CPSC says that it's fine to continue using your car seat in the car, but don't attempt to carry it using the handle until you've installed the free repair kit, available from Dorel. If you own one of the affected car seats, you can call (866) 762-3316 or visit Dorel's website to order a repair kit.
