Honda announced this morning that it would be recalling approximately 646,000 Honda Fit models globally due to a potential fire hazard posed by a faulty master switch. In the United States, this recall affects 141,140 examples of the 2007 and 2008 Honda Fit. Note that the 2007 - 2008 Honda Fit is the previous-generation car, as pictured to the left, and not the model currently available at your local Honda showroom. Also included in the recall are the Honda Jazz (that's the Fit's name in Europe) and City (a Fit-based sedan sold in non-U.S. markets).
Reuters reports that water can potentially leak into the car's master switch (this usually refers to the driver's set of window/door-lock switches) creating a situation that can possibly lead to a fire. Fox News reports that in the U.S., the condition has resulted in seven melted master switches, with two of those catching fire. So far, no injuries have been reported in conjunction with the issue. As a corrective action, the affected part will be fitted with a waterproof skirt that alleviates the problem.
We checked SaferCar.gov this morning, but as of right now, the recall does not come up in searches or have an associated NHTSA campaign ID number. Owners of 2007 or 2008 Honda Fits should contact their dealer or Honda Customer Service at 1-800-999-1009 for additional information and instructions.
