Between now and November 8, if you have an old drill -- even one that's not working -- you can bring it to your local Home Depot and trade it in for a 15-percent discount on a new lithium-ion cordless drill. The promotion is part of Home Depot's "Eco Options" drive, which is focused on getting customers to use more energy-efficient tools, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. We're kicking ourselves because we recently tossed a couple of old drills that hadn't worked in years during a recent garage clean-up. If your current drill is old and busted, don't make the same mistake we did. This might a good time to upgrade.
The good news is that Home Depot sells a few cordless lithium-ion drills that we covered in our recent report update. The Makita BDF452HW (*Est. 200) is our Best Reviewed cordless drill for construction projects, and while this 18V model might be overkill for some homeowners, the opportunity to snap it up at a 15% discount may make it look a lot more attractive. Reviewers applaud its light weight and say that a relatively low runtime is offset by its 15-minute fast-charger.
Home Depot also a couple of lithium-ion cordless drills that earned runner-up status in our latest update as well. The Ryobi HJP001K [*Est. $80] is inexpensive, lightweight, and comfortable to use. Some reviews report that runtime can vary, though, and it takes between 40 minutes and an hour to recharge. If you can live with that, this is a good opportunity to grab it at a discount right now.
The Ridgid R86006 18V lithium drill [*Est. $200] is comparable to the Best Reviewed Makita model described earlier, except it's heavier and thus might be more cumbersome for some users to handle. On the upside, it's got a lifetime warranty; if you pick this drill up, however, be sure you register it promptly to qualify for the warranty coverage.
Of course, there's no telling whether you might be able to swing a better deal on Black Friday, but if you need a drill right now, or you simply have no interest in the post-Thanksgiving shopping chaos, a trip to Home Depot might be worth your time over the next week or so.
