Woman washing and drying her clothes

Though they may seem more convenient, recent reviews of washer-dryer combos are extremely telling. Critics say these compact appliances, which wash and dry laundry in the same unit, have a tendency to be problematic. Let's run down some of the common complaints, as well as a couple of advantages the combos offer.

You might not want a washer-dryer combo because...

  • Drying times can be extremely long. While a full-size dryer can dry a load of laundry in 30 to 45 minutes, it's not uncommon for a washer-dryer combo to take three to four hours to dry an even smaller load, since they have a much smaller capacity than full-size dryers, usually around 2.5 cubic feet).
  • Your laundry takes more of a beating. Longer drying times can increase wear and tear on your laundry. In fact, many users say their washer-dryer combos leave laundry more wrinkled than traditional washers and dryers.
  • They're expensive. The best washer-dryer combos can wind up costing you well over $1,200.

On the other hand, washer-dryer combos offer...

  • More flexibility.  Washer-dryer combos don't require a dryer vent or gas hookup for operation, since they're all electric-only. As a result, you have more options when it comes to where you can locate them in your home.
  • Space-saving size. Combo units are smaller than their standalone counterparts. This makes them an appealing option to consumers who are strapped for space.
