Since 2007, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled more than 11 million dangerous cribs. In mid-December, they unanimously passed the toughest crib standards in history.
Effective June 2011, gone are the days of the drop-side rail cribs. Manufacturers will no longer be allowed to make, sell or lease these cribs that have made it easier for parents to reach their children but associated with at least 32 infant suffocation and strangulation deaths since 2000.
In addition to the ban on drop-side cribs, all cribs will have stronger mattress supports and more durable hardware; and will undergo more rigorous safety testing.
Childcare facilities and hotels and motels will have two years to replace their cribs.
