So what's wrong with this picture? Where do we begin....
First off, everyday people don't possess the skill and knowledge of physicians. They don't know how to correctly administer an injection or sanitize their tools to prevent a raging infection. And they aren't acquainted with facial nerve maps, so they're literally injecting blindly. Sound innocent enough? Well, hit the wrong spot, experts say, and it could mean disfigurement.
Additionally, the ingredients in these kits are often cryptic and shady. All too often, experts say, these products are not regulated by the FDA. One such company, DiscountMedSpa.com, was recently admonished for selling DIY chemical peels and wrinkle injection kits, complete with informational videos on how and where to inject for consumers. (The site has been shut down after it was exposed on ABC's 20/20.)
