I come from a long line of creative women. My grandmother took up sculpture in the 1950s and welded some impressive modernist pieces. Among my mom's many creative outlets are knitting (she's an expert) and water color. As for me, I can pick paint colors, find fantastic decorative accessories and arrange furniture but when it comes to the more crafty projects I have in mind (I'm talking knitted lampshades and an upholstered headboard for starters), I don't have the time. My DIY skills are used making things like Valentines for my son's classmates or coloring with my daughter.

At a recent press event hosted by the crafting company EK Success, I was delighted to find embroidery kits that allow you to make semi-DIY decorative accessories. The kits, which range in price from $7.99 to $29.99, come with heat transfer patterns that you can iron onto anything from pillows to tea towels as well as all the embroidery floss you'll need to complete the project. The detailed instructions tell you exactly how to make the stitches. A store bought pillow plus a little embroidery equals one unique piece or the perfect gift. Check out some of the great designs below.
